Coronation Street fans fume at soap bosses for ruining long-standing character

Coronation Street viewers have claimed the ITV soap has made Amy Barlow "unlikeable".

The character has been on the cobbles for almost 20 years and was played by several actresses before Elle Mulvaney took over the role in 2010. A recent plot has seen her take matters into her own hands after she was raped by Aaron Sandford, with Amy trying to prevent predators from hurting other women.

One incident saw a man end up in hospital and Amy also vandalised a police car, getting herself arrested. The dark storyline has left some Corrie fans baffled by the change in Amy, with one saying she "used to be a normal character" and asking what happened.

"Amy on her vigilante s*** again," another person posted on X after a recent scene. Someone else agreed by posting a shocked face emoji and writing: "Amy is now a vigilante."

"Amy Barlow the vigilante on a mission to right the world's wrongs," said another. "Give it a couple of weeks and she'll be dressing up as Batman." Someone else said that the character had become "so unlikeable". "Isn't Amy awful," they said on X. Another unimpressed viewer wrote on a soap forum: "What have they done to her character? She is absolutely awful these days."

When someone else asked what they meant, the viewer replied: "She used to be a normal character. Now she is vandalising police cars and taking someone to an industrial estate at night to leave them to die." "Seriously #Corrie!!!" posted one viewer. "What boring annoying storylines you keep on having. This Amy Barlow story is just another stupid story being dragged out by you." However, plenty of other people have been thrilled to see Amy doing her bit. "Just to be clear Amy – you should be given a medal for what you did," one fan wrote on X.

Another remarked: "Amy Barlow is the best character in the show at the minute." Others have said Amy's actions are part of her trying to work through her trauma.
