Over 1 million people played Starfield at the same time on Wednesday

Microsoft has revealed how popular Starfield was on launch day, as it passed 1 million concurrent players on PC and Steam in 24 hours.

Given that it can be played at no extra cost via Game Pass, you could argue that sales figures are more important than usual for Xbox exclusives, as it shows how many people were willing to ignore the cheaper route in order to get the game as soon as possible and to own it forever.

There are no official sales numbers for Starfield, but prior to launch the upgrade for the Premium Edition was the best-selling Xbox title worldwide, with people apparently desperate to get hold of the game as soon as possible.

Now Microsoft has announced that Starfield had more than 1 million concurrent players across ‘all platforms’ on Wednesday – the official launch day.

No further details were offered, and Microsoft is usually very cagey about Xbox sales, but the game’s success can be easily tracked via Steam.

Starfield has been the best-selling game on Steam for over a week now, although it’s currently only the sixth most played game, below Apex Legends, Baldur’s Gate 3. PUGB, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike.

Its peak concurrent figure on Steam is a relatively modest 269,177, compared to Baldur’s Gate 3’s 875,343, but that will continue to increase the more people buy the game.

Starfield will likely end up as Microsoft’s most successful game launch of the last two generations, even if that’s not saying all that much.

After just a day it’s already in sight of Halo Infinite’s all-time peak figure of 272,586 on Steam and will likely pass that by at least the weekend.

The peak concurrent record for Fallout 4, Bethesda Game Studio’s last major single-player release, was 472,962 eight years ago, and there’s a good chance it’ll beat that as well.
