Martin Kemps worry for son Roman after he opens up on debilitating issue
Martin Kemp has admitted he has been worried about his son Roman Kemp’s mental health, but is proud of the “man he is becoming”.
Capital Breakfast show host Roman, 30, recently opened up about experiencing suicidal thoughts during his battle with depression which began aged 15. .
In 2020, he decided to raise awareness about the importance of mental health in a BBC documentary following his best friend’s suicide. He has also since called on the Government to do more to help with the ever growing crisis.
Spandeu Ballet star Martin has now discussed how much he used to worry about Roman in his younger years.
Speaking on The Netmums Podcast, the singer explained that his son often confided in his wife Shirlie as a teen, but he knew what was going on and tried to help when he could.

“He was hiding it a lot more [from me] and he was a lot more open with Shirlie,” Martin shared.
“And I knew he was doing that, so when he was talking to me I tried to keep him up.
“But obviously I saw moments in him that made me worry, I saw different things that affected him.”
Fast forward the years however and Martin is proud of how Roman has turned his battle into a positive with helping others.
He continued: “He went through a terrible experience with his best friend, he commited suicide a while back.

“He’s grabbed onto that and made something good out of it. I love Roman so much, not because of what he’s achieved in his career or anything like that, it’s just about the person he is. The man he is becoming is really nice.”
As well as his battles with mental health, Roman recently opened up about suffering physically from sleep apnoea due to his hectic work schedule.
Speaking to the Mail Online, he said: “My tiredness levels were debilitating, and they said to me it was because of my job and I said this is different.
“I was talking with people where I thought I was verging on narcolepsy because I was mid-conversation and would be snoring and not realising, it was very strange.”
With his concerns, he sought advice from a doctor, who told him he must wear an oxygen mask in bed.
Since then, Roman joked that there was “absolutely nothing sexy” about going back to his house for romance.
He added: “They are expecting candles and mood lighting but they’re getting a Darth Vader impression into an oxygen tank.
“My love life will look a niche Channel 5 documentary!”
In the same chat, he revealed he would love to stay on air for at least a decade, if his bosses allowed it, although admitted his goal was to be a stay-at-home dad who owned a dog sanctuary.
