The real reason BD Wong left Law and Order SVU as Dr George Huang

Bonus scene of Det. Muncy's Law and Order: SVU goodbye

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Law and Order SVU.

Law and Order SVU is expected to return for its 24th season next year but why did actor BD Wong make his departure?

Actor Wong was first introduced as Dr George Huang in season two of the NBC legal drama, working as an FBI psychiatrist.

He was always there to assist the NYPD detectives with their investigations and remained in the series for a whopping 11 years.

It wasn’t until season 12 George left the team but did infrequently return for episodes from season 13 to 17.

During season 17’s Depravity Standard, Huang revealed he took early retirement from the FBI and would be doing consultation work in New York, bringing his time on Law and Order SVU to a close for good.

Why did BD Wong leave Law and Order SVU as Dr George Huang?

Wong chose to leave Law and Order SVU to pursue other acting opportunities and in 2011, found one in NBC’s psychological police drama Awake.

He was cast as therapist Dr Jonathan Lee but due to conflicting filming schedules, Wong had to choose between Law and Order SVU and Awake, eventually choosing the latter.

Announcing his decision on X, formerly known as Twitter, at the time, he wrote: “I am jumping to Awake! It’s awesome! Don’t know if or when I’ll be back [on SVU]”

“It was amazing to have such a cool job for 11 years and to be a real NY actor.”

Unfortunately, this may not have been the best move as the network chose to cancel Awake after just one season.

Nevertheless, Wong’s career has continued to flourish elsewhere on both the big and small screens.

Some of his work over the years has been in Madam Secretary, the Jurrasic Park franchise, American Horror Story, Birdbox, The Flash, The Courtroom and Heart of Stone.

He also ventured into the world of directing two years ago, getting behind the camera for Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.

It’s not clear what Wong will be working on next but there hasn’t been any indication he’ll reunite with the stars of Law and Order SVU.

The legal series was renewed for season 24 but because of the ongoing writers and actors strikes, the series has been delayed.

So for the time being, fans are going to have to wait to find out what happens next in the hit show.

Law and Order SVU is available to watch on NBC.
