EastEnders boss announces more iconic characters will return to BBC soap after Cindy Beale
EastEnders is to see the return of more beloved characters in the coming months following the successful comeback of Cindy Beale.
The return of Cindy, played by Michelle Collins, left fans floored – while also sparking a social media frenzy and boosting ratings. Now, the BBC One soap’s executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, has confirmed that more popular characters are going to be making a comeback – with their identities set to be announced soon.
EastEnders has received huge support from its loyal audience recently – helping the soap to win big at the National Television Awards and the Inside Soap Awards. As well as being buoyed by the return of Cindy from the dead, fans of the show have also welcomed comeback cameos from former favourites Lauren Branning, played by Jacqueline Jossa, and Fatboy, played by Ricky Norwood.
Eastenders boss Chris has told the Daily Star: "There will be some characters returning in the not too distant future. They will be announced soon. Watch this space."
He added that some new characters were “arriving soon" too. Speaking about the show’s devoted audience, he said: "Don't underestimate the soap audience. What we do is for our audience. We have a really loyal fanbase. If you can strike the right chord with storylines, they will get behind it."
Cindy Beale returned to EastEnders last month after 25 years away from Albert Square. Many Walford residents believed she had died – but she had actually been in witness protection for all that time.
Viewers were enthralled in June when the soap aired a special episode which revealed that Cindy was living abroad with Ian and son Peter Beale under the name of Rose Knight. During that episode, Ian asked to go back to London after Cindy's witness protection ended, but she insisted that she was happy as things were. However, when son Peter headed back to Albert Square, she decided to follow him.
And after Cindy’s return, EastEnders fans believed they had "worked out" that another legendary character would come back to protect Bobby Beale.
Cindy is of course the mum of the late Lucy Beale, who was murdered by Bobby. He has tried to move on over recent months but, as Cindy returned, it was clear he was still struggling with his guilt.
As the fallout from Cindy's return continues to send shockwaves around the Square, she is yet to confront Bobby about her daughter's death. With that moment likely to come, fans of the soap think Jane Beale will return in a bid to protect him.
Jane was married to Ian from 2007 until 2011 and the pair remarried in 2015 before they left Walford in 2017. While Bobby is not her biological son, she always looked at him as her own.
One fan wrote on Twitter: "Calling it now Jane going to arrive back Christmas Day while the Beale’s are all sitting around for their Christmas dinner."
