Corrie star claims Jenny and Stephen are heartbroken as love story ends
Coronation Street's Jenny and Stephen were all set to build a new life together in Thailand – until Carla's devastating news put an end to their plans. But Sally-Ann Matthews, who plays Jenny, says there is genuine "heartbreak" over their relationship ending.
On Monday 9 October, viewers saw Carla warn Jenny not to head off to Thailand with dodgy Stephen, telling her everything she knows in a bid to stop Stephen's Weatherfield escape.
Carla recently discovered that evil Stephen had been drugging her for weeks in order to steal the factory from her. Everyone feared the Underworld boss was struggling with psychosis again, after a past mental health battle. But Carla learned she had been drugged with LSD, and eventually realised Stephen was the culprit.
In upcoming scenes tonight, Friday 13 October, Carla will also realise that Stephen, who has murdered several people on the cobbles, has been tricking coworker Michael into giving him his access code to the factory bank accounts. This allows Stephen to transfer hundreds of thousands of pounds into a bogus one he has set up amid his plan to flee to Thailand.
Now, as viewers watch the fallout and hope for Stephen's demise, Sally-Ann has opened up about the pair's unconventional "love story".
"Stephen hasn't done anything wrong in Jenny's eyes because she has never seen him be violent, he has only ever been supportive and kind to her and that is because he loves her," she told the Daily Express.
However, "self-preservation" kicks in for Jenny when she realises Stephen wants money. Jenny starts to have flashbacks of what her dad did to Rita and she "has that moment where she thinks this isn't love".
But Sally-Ann still believes Stephen's love for Jenny is genuine, and talks of how viewers can see the character's "heartbreak" as Jenny tells him she wants to delay their trip.
"Ultimately it is a love story as well and if he had not been a murderous b*****d, they would have had a really good time together. She is heartbroken that he has done this but as far as she is concerned he is a con-man and a fraudster and he is after her money. She isn't aware that he has murdered anybody because she is not privy to that information," she said.
Viewers of Wednesday 11 October's episode saw everything unravel for Stephen as the body of one of his victims, discovered by Tim, was brought out of the canal. Stephen headed for the airport solo, but when he got there he realised his passport was missing. He then rushed back to Weatherfield, making a B-line for Jenny, who he thinks stole it to stop him leaving. Will he make Jenny his final victim?
