Coronation Street's Beth Tinker star breaks silence on absence from soap and exit rumours | The Sun

CORONATION Street star Lisa George has broken her silence on the future of her character Beth Tinker amid exit rumours.

Lisa, 52, joined the ITV soap in 2011 but has been missing from screens in recent months.

The soap star sparked exit rumours after she expressed an interest in appearing in Call the Midwife during an interview with Women’s Weekly.

This, coupled with her extended absence from the series, led many to believe she had concluded her 12-year run on the soap.

But, after months of speculation, the long-time Corrie star has finally explained her absence from the cobbles and confirmed that she’s not going anywhere.

She revealed to the outlet that contract issues were part of the reason Beth has been missing from screens.

Additionally, Lisa chose to take some time off in August to go travelling, but contracted Coronavirus when she returned last month.

Addressing the rumours at last week’s Pride of Britain Awards, Lisa told the Mirror: “It’s really weird, everyone was saying ‘you’re leaving, you’re leaving.’"

She explained: “I was asked about my contract and I said I was waiting, and so they asked what I’d like to do if I didn’t get one and I said Call The Midwife. That’s all I said. It was a passing comment, then the next thing, everyone is ringing me like, ‘you’re leaving, you’re leaving.'

“I was like no, ‘what’s all this? No, I don’t know anything about it.’ It’s just weird. I don’t even know how it happened from the passing comment.”

She also noted that her character Beth would never leave the cobbles without her partner Kirk Sutherland (played by Andrew Whyment).

Explaining her absence Lisa said: “I haven’t been in, I went travelling around Europe in August, I did four countries. It was brilliant. I had a wicked time. I went on my own and I had an amazing time.”

When she returned, she got her new contract, but soon contracted Coronavirus, which had her out of action.

A number of the crew were also struck down by the virus ahead of Super Soap Week, leading to many of her scenes getting cut and rewritten without her.

“I was gutted as I really liked the scenes as well, it was Super Soap Week and there was a sudden rush of Covid and we were dropping like flies, and unfortunately I got it as well.”

However, Lisa has now recovered and is ready to get back to work, admitting she has a lot to catch up on.

“I wasn’t in work after July and had Covid in September so suddenly I feel completely out of the loop because I have missed so much so I don’t know what’s coming up.”

Coronation Street airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
