After a dismal summer, a last minute burst of sunshine has graced the UK, with temperatures soaring past 30C in some places, making it hotter than California.
Many Brits will be putting away their winter clothes and dusting off their fans for another week to combat the sweltering heat.
And, as lots of homes don’t have fitted air conditioning, millions of Britons will be reliant on fans to cool them down.
But, according to some TikTokers, you’ve been using fans all wrong, and thousands were left shocked after user Leah White demonstrated an alternate way of using them.
A TikToker has told her followers they’ve been using fans wrong their entire lives, according to Leah White, they should be pointed towards the window
According to experts at online bedrooms, pointing the fan out the window could actually help, but it all depends on time of day and the type of fan you have
Posting to her 8000 TikTok followers, @leahwhite4828, said: ‘How did it take me 28 years to know this?’
She explained: ‘We’re in a new build and it’s quite a small house, so it retains heat so well and it’s absolutely boiling every night.

‘We’ve been having a fan on and we’ve been waking up sniffing and we’ve got a cold – and I’m guessing that’s from having a fan on all night.’
She continued: ‘I’m 28 years old – and please someone tell me that I’m not the only one who didn’t know this. Apparently, you’re meant to have the fan facing a window with the windows open – and then you turn the fan on and it basically sucks all of the warm air out of the room outside.
‘I’ve just had it on for like 15 minutes and my room is probably the coolest it has ever been. Did anyone else know this or was it just me being absolutely stupid?’
According to experts, the trick could actually work, Nic Shacklock at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk said: ‘One of the drawbacks of having a fan on in the room at night is that it just circulates hot air in the room without making it cooler.
‘Pointing the fan out of the window at night helps to blow the hot air out of the room to achieve a lower room temperature.’
How did it take me 28 years to know this?! 😩😂😂 #fan #unbelievable #heat #cool #fyp
In order for the hack to work, Nic said you need to consider three factors: time, position and the dimensions of the fan.
Speaking to MailOnline, he said: ‘Make sure to position the fan facing out of the window to ensure all hot air is being blown out.
According to Nic, the trick works best with a small, circular electric fan, as seen in Leah’s TikTok video. While tall, tower fans may be too tricky to navigate.
Nic explained that the best time to do this trick is in the early evening, to make the room as cool as possible before you go to sleep.
He added: ‘Don’t forget to monitor the internal temperature of the room against the outside one. If it’s hotter outside than it is inside, it’ll have little effect on cooling the room especially if there’s a lack of wind.’
The TikTok video has gained over 90,000 likes and thousands of grateful users took to the comment section.
One person wrote: ‘What?!’ I’ve just had it blowing directly in my face.’ Another added: ‘I’m way older than you and just learned this today.’
While a third person wrote: ‘I never knew that, but I do remember walking past a house that had two fans in a window like that, and I thought that was weird. But I will try it now.’
