Full list of shops closing down in September including Iceland and Wetherspoons – is your local shutting? | The Sun

HIGH street shops are disappearing left, right and centre and there's a whole host of stores closing in September.

Iceland, Wetherspoons, Homebase and other top brands are pulling down the shutters on several of their shops next month.

Some stores will be replaced with brand new shops while others will leave the high street forever.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

Here's a full list of some well-known retailers that will be shutting dozens of branches this September:

Iceland

Iceland is popular among customers looking to shop for less, but you may want to check if your local is set to close for good.

The supermarket has announced it will be shutting some stores this year with three closing next month.

These are:

  • Llanelli (September 2)
  • Birkenhead (September 16)
  • Crewe (September 16)

Two stores also closed last month and in July:

  • Swansea (July 29)
  • Fife (August 12)

Despite the closures, Iceland still runs around 500 branches and 153 Food Warehouse stores in the UK.

Wetherspoons

Wetherspoons is also pulling the plug on some of its pubs.

The Six Chimneys in Wakefield will shut to punters on Monday, September 18 to undergo redevelopment.

The Moon on The Hill in Loughborough, Leicestershire, is set to close before the end of the year, but an exact date is yet to be confirmed.

It comes after the chain – which has 827 pubs across the UK – warned last September that 32 pubs were being put up for sale.

Shoezone

Shoezone will pull the shutters down on one of its stores in its latest round of closures.

The Newport High street shop on the Isle of Wight will be closing, though there's no exact date yet.

The Edinburgh shop also shut in July and its Hinkcley and Beccles stores are set to close though Shoezone hasn't said when.

The high street chain has also closed multiple branches this year, including in Northampton and Bristol.

Homebase

Home and garden giant Homebase is also shutting some of its shops.

The DIY and garden specialist will shut its Newport store for good on Friday, September 8.

It's the sixth store to close in Wales since 2018 when three stores in Cardiff closed.

Homebase has closed 93 stores since it was taken over by Hilco Capital in 2018.

House of Fraser

House of Fraser confirmed to The Sun that its branch in Guildford will shut on Saturday, September 30.

Its store in Solihull closed on Monday, August 28.

In February, the chain turned its store in Birmingham into an outlet and closed its iconic store in the Howells building in Cardiff.

In January, it closed its department store in High Wycombe, two months after its store in Westfield Shepherd's Bush closed for the last time.

The survival of high street giant Wilko is also up in the air at the moment.

The retailer collapsed into administration earlier this month, putting its 400 stores at risk of closure and 12,500 jobs in jeopardy.

But a second last-minute bid to rescue the ailing business has since been received by M2 Capital, The Guardian reports.

However, it isn't all doom and gloom for shoppers.

Some retailers are opening or relocating their stores.

B&M is opening half a dozen new branches after a string of closures.

It's also relocating a string of shops across the UK.

The first new shop opened on August 16.

Here's the full list of stores opening in September:

  • Switch Island, Liverpool – (September 9) – relaunch
  • Eastbourne (September 14)
  • Stockton (September 14)
  • Leven Garden Centre (September 20) – garden centre only
  • Hinkley (September 23)
  • Wigan (September 29)

Poundland has recently confirmed that it is opening 15 stores across the UK.

In February, Primark confirmed plans to expand one of its stores and move two of its existing shops to new locations.

The following month it revealed it would be opening up more Greggs cafes across the UK.

But the retailer also has plans to open one more store within just weeks.

It will be opening a new 29,700-square foot store in the old British Home Stores (BHS) building at the Old George Mall in Salisbury, on September 13.
