Sam Smith sends powerful message of support to trans community

Sam Smith penned a message of support to the trans community and shared their thoughts with their social media followers on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old non-binary singer took to their Instagram Stories to post a typed out note that urged trans people to know they were ‘not alone’.

They uploaded the text against a black background and said: ‘To all trans/non binary and gender non conformoing people in the UK right now…..

‘You are not alone. Your humanity and your life matters. Sending every one of you so much love x.’

The star posted the message in the aftermath of the news that transgender people could be banned from working on single-sex hospital as part of restorative plans set to implement ‘common sense’ in the NHS.

The health secretary Steve Barclay spoke at the recent Conservative party conference and announced that a review into how to protection women was being considered.

He said at the conference, according to the BBC: ‘We need a common-sense approach to sex and equality issues in the NHS – that is why today I am announcing proposals for clearer rights for patients.’

His words came after the NHS issued new guidance in 2021 that outlined trans people could be placed on wards ibn accordance with the sepcific gender they identify as.

Should changes be made to the guidelines, trans people would be given their own designated rooms and areas in hospitals.

The health secretary further explained that he wanted to make sure the ‘dignity, safety and privacy’ of all patients was respected, as well as taking extra care to protect the rights of women.

In light of the proposed changes, Cleo Madeleine – a spokesperson for the Gendered Intelligence charity – shared: ‘It’s disappointing.

‘The NHS has always adopted a common-sense approach based on patients’ wants and needs, and there have been no issues with this system.

‘It is not something that has led to widespread complaints.

‘Trans people already are less likely to seek medical care because they are concerned they will be judged and announcements like this just reinforces those fears.’

Counteracting Cleo’s words, Maya Forstater – from the Sex Matters campaign group –  claimed the announcement was ‘fantastic news’.
