Marvel slammed for 'lying' for calling The Marvels 'number-one movie'
Marvel is accused of ‘LYING’ after claiming that new film The Marvels is ‘the number-one movie in the world’ – despite box-office bomb making just $47 million, the lowest MCU opening of all time
- The Marvels is the lowest-earning box office opening for an MCU film
- However, it still earned the most at the box office this weekend, beating out Five Nights at Freddy’s which earned $9 million
- Fans still feel Marvel doesn’t have the right to boast about this box office bomb
The Marvels debuted this weekend with record low profits at the box office.
The MCU film earned just $47 million domestically, which is the lowest franchise opening of all time.
However, Avengers: Endgame earned almost 10 times as much with a whopping $357 million during its opening weekend three and a half years ago.
In spite of this Marvel decided to remain optimistic with its promotions.

‘#TheMarvels have arrived. Don’t miss the #1 movie in the world, now playing in theaters everywhere,’ the franchise wrote on its official X, formerly known as Twitter, account on Sunday.
Fans were quick to protest Marvel’s declaration, claiming the film was ‘definitely not the number 1 movie’ and that the studio was delusional.
‘Which world? Your own? Because it sure as hell ain’t this one,’ one user tweeted.
‘”#1 movie in the world?” I knew that my optician’s appointment was long overdue but thanks for reminding me,’ another quipped.
A third tweeted: ‘#1 movie in the world? Does this mean i can sue you guys for false advertisement?’
Others felt that Marvel shouldn’t be able to claim the number-one spot due to its low box office results.
‘Number 1 movie in the world I thought this was the lowest opening of any marvel movie,’ one user tweeted.
Another wrote: ‘The #1 movie in the world is setting the record for biggest opening weekend flop for the MCU.’

Fans who’ve already seen the movie claimed it was ‘boring’ and ‘the worst Marvel movie.’
‘The film was boring and didn’t do anything to push the MCU in a good direction, the best thing was the post credit scene with Beast,’ one user stated.
‘You guys are kidding, right? Just watched it and it’s BY FAR the worst Marvel movie of your history (and I’ve seen them all!). What a shame. I’ve never been so disappointed,’ another tweeted.
Some disputed that The Marvels isn’t the number one film statistically. Currently, Barbie sits at the number-one spot, as per Box Office Mojo.
Meanwhile The Marvels sits in spot 41.
‘According to Box Office Mojo The Marvels is ranked 41. You know you lied and we know you lied. You’re not helping,’ one user pointed out.
Others noted that even if Marvel was referring to movies currently in theaters, Five Nights at Freddy’s still has The Marvels beat.
While The Marvels earned $47 million domestically, Five Nights at Freddy’s earned $78 million during its opening weekend and now has $127 million in earnings so far.

Marvel’s top five highest-grossing box office opening weekends
1. Avengers: Endgame – $357 million
2. Avengers: Infinity War – $257 million
3. The Avengers – $207 million
4. Black Panther – $202 million
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $191 million
‘You watch how they lie. Five nights at Freddy’s is the current #1 movie in the world,’ another penned.
‘According to Google the number one movie at the box office is “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and NOT “The Marvels” LOL,’ a third cited.
Because of this, movie goers are calling Marvel a ‘liar.’
Technically, Marvel is able to claim that it sat at the number-one spot based on this weekend’s box office alone.
The Marvels made the most out of any movie at the box office this weekend, even though it was only raked in $47 million, while Five Nights at Freddy’s earned $9 million in its third weekend.
Even still, movie goers feel that claiming the number-one spot on a weak box office weekend isn’t necessarily a boast.
‘#1 on a weekend when nothing else major opened. Five Nights at Freddy’s has already earned back its budget. This flop never will,’ one wrote.
‘Bwahahahaha! The Marvels is flopping right now, but hey, it’s the #1 in the world with no competition… so dumb,’ another added.

‘I see what ya did there.. no competition made it fairly easy to say. But where does it fall within the grand scheme?’ a third user asked.
What could have also contributed to The Marvels’ lackluster box-office takings has been the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.
Brie Larson and the other film’s stars haven’t been able to promote The Marvels due to the SAG strike, which ended on November 9.
The Marvels follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), also known as Captain Marvel, after she destroyed the Supreme Intelligence.
This leads to her powers being split between Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Lashana Lynch).
The three unite and become The Marvels in order to take down the new leader of Kree, Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton).
