Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has said she is "heartbroken" after picking up a horrific injury to her foot.

Dowden, 33, posted a snap to her Instagram of her stood by her fireplace which revealed to see her wearing a medical boot after fracturing her foot. As a result, this meant that Amy's dreams of returning to the BBC show in a dancing capacity have been dashed for this year.

Amy, who has been following Strictly intently this year, had been hoping to rejoin her professional pals on the dance floor after receiving chemo to help her fight her breast cancer. While she has now finished the treatment, her foot injury has all but ruled out a return to the ballroom.

Captioning the post, Amy wrote: "Not the week I was hoping for since finishing chemo. Port out but unfortunately gained a boot for a fractured foot."

She continued: "Absolutely gutted and heartbroken as this means the plans for me to dance in the Strictly Ballroom this year are no longer possible. This is what has kept me going the past few months – 2023 is certainly not my year, roll on 2024 I say!"

Despite not competing on the show, Amy has made several appearances throughout the series, as Strictly bosses commit to having her back on the dance floor when she's healthy. In one of the series' live shows, she fought back tears as she helped host Claudia Winkleman read out the terms and conditions of voting.

As a result of her devastating news, loyal fans of the show and fellow professionals swamped her comments section with messages of support. It Takes Two host Jannette Manrara sent her love, writing: "Oh no! Well in that case, 2024 could not be coming sooner!"

Amanda Abbington, who dramatically left this year's edition of the show, also paid tribute to Amy. Taking to the comments, she wrote: "Sending you the most love!!! Rest up beautiful girl."

Whilst fellow professional Dianne Buswell, who is close pals with Dowden, added: "Next year is yours. Thinking of ya my Amy," followed by three kisses.

Amy has been bravely battling breast cancer after being diagnosed with the disease earlier this year. After making the tough decision to have a mastectomy in July, she has undergone chemo to eliminate small extra tumours doctors had found – going on to her final round of treatment this month.
