However, one Co-op customer felt a little short-changed after getting a 'shameful' amount of filling in his custard doughnuts this week.

Customer Chris Arnold took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (October 11) evening to share a photo of his paltry custard filling in the doughnut as he reached out to the brand. And he told them he was left 'broken-hearted' over the situation.

Writing on the site, Chris said: "I’m sorry @coopuk but finding out the custard doughnuts I bought from you have this much custard in them has actually broken my heart."

Chris included a photo of the meekly-filled doughnut next to the bag he bought them in, to show they were from Co-op, alongside a close-up of the dab of custard on the sweet treat. He then zoomed-in on the tiny custard splodge even more, as he added: "I mean…"

The post has since gone viral – racking up more than 11,900 views. And people seemed to be outraged over the situation, judging by the comments. One person exclaimed: "That’s shameful. Go to Sainsbury’s. The donuts are a gift that keeps on giving."

Another person called it a "bread flavour doughnut", while someone else joked: "Ah man they got custard in your bag of rolls." Someone else poked fun at the 'Co-op: Good with food' catchphrase.

A Co-op spokesperson responded to Chris on the tweet, apologising for the mishap. They wrote: "Hi Chris, I'm sorry about this. I will raise this with the supplier. Can you please provide us with a picture of your receipt and which store you have visited?"

Chris told them he didn't have a receipt though, as he responded: "It's my local shop in Shirehampton, Bristol (sorry to grass you in guys) but I didn't keep the receipt. I often don't keep the receipt when I buy treats I intend to devour immediately. I'm living fast and loose I guess!"

Daily Star has contacted Chris and Co-op for comment.
