After our dismal summer, like many, I’m dithering over whether to grab a last-minute autumn holiday abroad.

However, following the news that the mayor of Dubrovnik has banned people from wheeling suitcases through the streets of the old town, the beautiful Croatian city is now top of my wish list.

Referred to as ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’ it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit.

Knowing that my chances of being maimed by a wheelie suitcase are now hugely reduced only adds to its appeal.

Mayor Mato Frankovic has implemented the rule after complaints from locals that the constant clacking sound of wheels on cobbles was disturbing their peace.

Owners of wheelie suitcases drag these bags behind them, totally oblivious to the chaos they leave in their wake as their dirty wheels run over exposed toes in sandals and trip people up

Visitors now have to carry suitcases or risk a fine. In November things will get even stricter when all luggage must be left at the walls of the old town.

Anyone who needs their baggage transported to a hotel will have to pay for a courier to deliver it by electric vehicle.

The boom in budget airlines and their policy of charging for hold luggage has led to a rise in the sale of cabin cases — compact pieces of luggage suitable for short breaks and that fit tidily under a seat or in a locker, the overwhelming majority being on wheels.

These wretched bags are now also commonplace on Tubes, trains and buses as office workers use them instead of briefcases and holdalls.

Let’s hope more tourist hot spots follow in the footsteps of Dubrovnik by banning these wheelie cases — and sparing our precious toes.
