Alistair Stewart OBE has been diagnosed with dementia.

The legendary broadcaster, 71, revealed details of the condition in an interview with GB News on Sunday (September 10) and said it was the reason why he had decided to step back from presenting his show on the channel earlier this year.

He revealed that "very short-term memory is tricky" and "motor skills (are) very tricky.

Alistair went on to explain that he started to feel "discombobulated" around "six to nine months" ago while performing tasks around his home which promoted him to visit the doctors.

Scans showed that he had suffered a series of strokes and he was later diagnosed with the disease, which he said was "incurable"

Speaking exclusively to Camilla Tominey,, he said he was determined to carry on working with the channel as a contributor for as long as possible.

The former ITV News presenter said the thing he has "found most difficult to deal with" is seeing his wife, Sally, being "reduced to a carer".

But in an emotional message to viewers, he vowed: "I’ll be fine. I'll see you soon."

Alastair said he’d made some changes to his lifestyle, including stopping smoking, to try and deal with the condition.

But he admitted the hardest thing was the impact on family members.

He told Camilla: "I find it tricky, because your health, through no fault of your own, is reducing this person who is the single most important person in your life to the role of a carer.

"And so if you do think there is something wrong with you, then go and see the GP and listen to what he or she says but also do remember that the people you work with and the people you live with and share your life with are the most important people in the entire world."

He fought back the tears when Camilla surprised him with the news that GB News’ new Westminster studio complex would have the main studio named in his honour – The Alastair Stewart Westminster Studio.

He said:"I’m honoured, deeply honoured and deeply touched by that, and I look forward to working from there as we get closer to the election. I am looking forward to continuing to contribute to GB News."
