Amidst chatter of a Nintendo Direct next week, a reliable leaker claims that something F-Zero related will finally be shown off.

Although there was a short Nintendo Direct last week, centred on Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s been rumoured before that a full length one will take place before the end of the month.

Much like Sony and its next State of Play, it would make sense given Nintendo’s track record of holding showcases during September, although don’t expect an official announcement until a day or two beforehand.

In the meantime, though, a previously reliable source has less than subtly hinted that the next Direct will feature some kind of F-Zero reveal.

There’ve been frequent demands for some kind of F-Zero revival for years but so far Nintendo has only added older entries to its Nintendo Switch Online service.

Precisely what sort of F-Zero announcement is planned is unclear as Twitter user Pyoro initially only wrote ‘Let’s just say fans of a certain MATLAB function will be happy with the upcoming Direct.’

If that sounds like nonsense to you, we don’t blame you, but MATLAB is basically a programming language… and one of its functions is ‘fzero.’

As a reminder, Pyoro accurately claimed that a new 2D Mario game and a remake of a SNES game (which turned out to be Super Mario RPG) would be announced during the June Direct, and correctly teased a Detective Pikachu related reveal as well.

When someone suggested that the F-Zero reveal will just be the addition of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity to the Switch’s Game Boy Advance library, Pyoro replied: ‘It will come to [Nintendo Switch Online] but I’m not teasing it.’

This isn’t the only thing Pyoro has teased either. More recently, they tweeted a GIF of Donkey Kong from the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Could we finally be seeing that new Donkey Kong game that was first rumoured two years ago?

What he doesn’t hint at though is anything to do with the Switch 2. Some fans have suggest that a September Direct would be a logical time to announce it but that’s never been more than a theory.

pic.twitter.com/qMW86bL92Z

Email gamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter.

Follow Metro Gaming on Twitter and email us at gamecentral@metro.co.uk

To submit Inbox letters and Reader’s Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use our Submit Stuff page here.

For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.

Sign up to all the exclusive gaming content, latest releases before they’re seen on the site.
