Actor Russell Tovey has reportedly split from his partner of seven years, hinting at the break-up with a cryptic Instagram post.

The actor, 41, has been in a long-term relationship with Steve Brockman since 2016. The couple were engaged for six months in 2018 but later split up, only to reunite in August 2019 – a year after breaking off their engagement.

But now, the actor's relationship seems to have permanently ended, after the Gavin and Stacey star shared a photo on the beach with his dog, Rocky, alongside the caption: "It's just you and me kid".

Russell then edited the caption to read: "This is all for you my son…."

As well as the cryptic hint, some eagle-eyed fans spotted that Russell and Steve, 39, have unfollowed each other – sparking further rumours that the pair have called it a day, The Mirror reports.

OK! has contacted Russell Tovey's representatives for a comment.

In 2020, Russell said he did not know whether he was still engaged to Steve after selling his engagement ring and giving the money to his brother during the time they were apart.

Speaking to The Telegraph at the time, he said: "Well, I don't know how it works. Because we were, then we broke up, now we're back together.

"Is it like Snakes and Ladders? Do you go back to the beginning of the game and have to work your way back up again?"

But the star later said they couldn't continue the first engagement because he had sold the ring he was proposed to with – with the Being Human star opting to give the money to his brother to spend on sweets when taking his family to Disney World.

Russell has been outspoken about accepting his sexuality, finding pride in being a gay man and speaking about the experiences leading to him coming out as gay in an interview with Attitude Magazine.

The actor said he was on the set of a TV show and was 'desperately in love' with an older actor – but tried to hide his feelings from his colleagues.

But a female co-star took him aside after realising his feelings for the actor, asking if he was gay and reassured him that it would be "great" if he was.

Russell said: "She said, 'If you are, that’s great; if you’re not, that’s fine. But you might be.' It felt like, oh, that’s an option. That is something I can possibly be. That’s what these feelings I'm having are.

"You feel lost and at that age, to have someone put their hand out and go, "Come here. This is just me giving a bit of advice." It stayed with me forever and changed everything."

Russell came out to himself when he was 15, but only told his family he was gay when he was 18.
