Yellowstone season four is well underway, kicking off straight after the events of series three’s cliffhanger. In preparation for the Western drama, some of its stars needed to learn more about what it is actually like growing up and living on a ranch. So creator Taylor Sheridan decided it would be best to send some of the Paramount Network stars off to learn the ropes for themselves.
Several members of the Yellowstone cast were sent away to learn how to ride a horse and to live off the grid.
One of which was actor Dave Annable who portrayed Lee Dutton in the first season.
While he wasn’t in the drama for very long, he was one of the stars who got to find out what it meant to be a cowboy.
He previously explained a little bit about his own experience taking part in the camp.
“It is brilliant to be a part of this and be a cowboy and go to cowboy camp – I mean it rocked!” Annable told Outsider.
“It was awesome and amazing. We got to go three or four days in the mountains on horseback.
“Taylor (Sheridan) really promotes authenticity. I couldn’t be further from being a cowboy.
“So, getting out there and learning how to ride on a horse – it was really just a great life experience.”
Some of the show’s stars didn’t get to take part for various reasons.
Actor Kevin Costner who plays John Dutton had already starred in several Westerns so was familiar with how to ride.
Lloyd Pierce star Forrie J Smith is a real-life cowboy who was in rodeo competitions before acting and Kelly Reilly’s character Beth Dutton has little to do with the animals following the death of her mother.
This left Rip Wheeler actor Cole Hauser, Kayce Dutton’s Luke Grimes, Jamie Dutton’s Wes Bentley, Jimmy Hurdstrom’s Jefferson White and Colby’s Denim Richards.
According to Hauser though, not everyone had the best time while living the wild life.

What did Jimmy do on Yellowstone? How did he break his word? [EXPLAINER]
During a Q&A with IMDB Burning Questions, the crew was questioned on their time as cowboy novices.
Actor Bentley told of how his co-star White had never ridden a horse prior to the show.
This is when Hauser piped up and joked: “His a** got so chapped at Cowboy Camp, they had to put bandaids all over him!”
Even in the drama itself, White’s character Jimmy hasn’t had the best experiences with horses.
In season three, Jimmy needed some extra money and so started taking part in rodeo competitions.
He fell off his horse early on in the series and was afraid to get back on.
However, after some convincing from his girlfriend Mia (Eden Brolin), Jimmy gave it another go but he fell off again and this time was left unconscious by the incident.
Thankfully, Jimmy was alright but John is now sending him off to another ranch so he can learn more about riding horses.
Yellowstone season 4 airs every Sunday on Paramount Network in America. A UK release date hasn’t yet been announced.
