The third season finale of Yellowstone ended with a bang – both figuratively and literally. After meddling with Market Equities throughout the series to try and keep his hands on the ranch, John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) found not just his life hanging in the balance, but daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) and son Kayce’s (Luke Grimes) too. However, the Dutton clan weren’t the only ones whose lives were targeted in the final episode of season three.

In the final moments of season three, episode 10, the identity of exactly who organised the hits on the Duttons remained relatively up in the air.

The most likely suspects are Roarke (Josh Holloway), Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) and Market Equities’ leading lady Willa (Karen Pittman), all of whom have their own reasons to try and take John and his family out of the picture.

However, caught in the crossfire was a poor mother and son duo whose car had suffered a flat tyre near the Yellowstone ranch.

John had stopped to lend a helping hand to the stranded mother only to be ambushed moments later and shot by an unknown gunman.

And desperate not to have witnesses, the gunman also mowed the unnamed woman down as she tried to make a run for it.

The son, meanwhile, was off trying to find some nuts and bolts he’d lost earlier that John had left in his care – but it looked like he’d managed to escape the flying bullets.

Paramount viewers saw a wounded John try to regain his composure after the ambush as he sat slumped up against his car but seemingly had suffered no fatal wounds.

For Beth and Kayce on the other hand, their fates remain firmly in the balance.

Beth was caught up in a deafening explosion at Schwartz and Meyer while Kayce was left alone with his pistol facing a barrage of automatic weapons the last fans saw.

So it doesn’t look good for the Duttons but back home safe and sound – for now at least – are the likes of Rip (Cole Hauser), Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill).

And it looks like John is going to need all of the tools and help he can get to get his own back on whoever shot him.

So with the boy’s mother now caught in the crossfire of the ambush, could John take him under his wing?

There are a few clues to suggest so, mostly the development of Tate over the past few years.

Tate has matured from Kayce and Monica’s naive young son into an inquisitive and eager youngster, keen to get to grips with how the Duttons run the ranch.

And over the seasons, John and Kayce have slowly let him into the operation, letting him watch the ranchers, taking him to auctions and even buying him his very own horse.

He’s also faced his fair share of trauma already after being shipped to a gang of neo-Nazis by the Beck brothers in season two.

Therefore, fans can see John has no problem moulding the youngsters into the life on the ranch and could easily replicate this with the young boy who’s now stranded without his mother.

John’s no stranger to taking in youngsters in need either, just look at how Rip’s life working with John started as he fled when a teen after murdering his own father.

With the Duttons’ backs well and truly up against the wall after the murder attempts, John may be forced to throw Tate and the young boy in at the deep end to add to the ranch’s firepower.

Fans will have to wait and see however to discover whether Beth and Kayce will survive to join him in his quest for revenge.

Yellowstone season 4 premieres on Paramount later this year.
