Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham returned to screens on Thursday to host the latest episode of Winterwatch which was broadcast live from Norfolk. The temperature outside was piercingly cold so the presenters wrapped up in many layers. As the episode got underway, Michaela said in jest people may think she’s put on weight since Springwatch.
The Winterwatch hosts, who were presenting live from the north coast of Norfolk, wrapped up for the instalment.
Chris, who was wearing a thick red coat as temperatures were just above freezing, asked Michaela how many layers she had on for the show.
She replied: “Do you know, I’ve got about five layers on, and I’ve got a hot water bottle and a duvet.”
“People might think I’ve put weight on since Springwatch, but no I’m just well wrapped up,” she quipped.
As Michaela laughed Chris added: “It’s three layers down, five up for me. It is pretty cold here.
“But you’re not really interested in our wardrobe, you want to know if Ray the rat has survived another night and day.”
BBC viewers have become invested in the rat’s survival, with many praying the animal avoids being ravaged by an owl.
However, as Chris continued to talk about the rat, he detailed how Ray could have been “ripped apart” in the night.
Reciting a poem about Ray, Chris said: “As the realm of daylight snores and sleeps, at the waters edge something rusty creeps.”
The naturalist continued: “Long of tail, reputation foul, it’s the brazen rat called Ray.
“Life is full of rats right now which may explain just how we’ve taken this rodent to heart.
“And asks, has he been ripped apart or has he survived another day?”

The host explained they hadn’t seen Ray on the river bank, but they had spotted a tawny owl which made itself at home in the rat’s spot.
He said the owl did find a rat down on the bank, but they weren’t sure whether it was Ray.
“The owl sizes up, swoops and kills,” Chris added as Michaela chipped in: “I know the nation is holding its breath.
“The anticipation. There is only one way to see if Ray is still with us.”
Luckily, Chris and Michaela confirmed Ray had indeed survived the night.
To prove Ray hadn’t fallen victim to the owl, they cut to live footage of the predatory bird and Michaela said: “Look at the tail, it doesn’t have a kink in, it’s not Ray!
“He has survived to live another night and another day.”
Winterwatch continues on Tuesday at 8pm on BBC Two.
