Monty Don has always been one of the main presenters of the BBC’s Gardeners’ World. Fans are currently enjoying the three-part winter special, which kicked off on December 10. Sadly, Monty Don isn’t involved with the second episode of the programme, leaving viewers wondering why he isn’t back in the garden.
Why isn’t Monty Don on the Gardeners’ World winter special?
Gardeners’ World viewers have loved the show for years for its beautiful gardens, useful insights, and, of course, its familiar presenters.
Monty Don has hosted the programme since 2003, making him inseparable from the show for many fans.
The horticulturalist recently brought the 2021 season to a close, giving fans an emotional farewell from the show.
“As we come to an end of another quite difficult and strange year, I don’t think gardens have ever been more important and given so much pleasure and comfort to so many people than they do now,” Monty explained.
However, he did make another appearance in the first episode of the winter specials, back doing what he does best in the garden.
Yet, during the second episode which airs at 8pm on December 17, Monty will be nowhere to be seen.
Instead, Adam Frost, Nick Bailey, Frances Tophill, Carol Klein, Arit Anderson, and Rachel de Thame will host the show in his absence.
Adam will be leading the show, as Monty explained at the end of the first episode.
Monty said: “I hope you enjoyed this special celebratory programme, we’ve got two more to come.
“One which will be hosted by Adam, and another when I will be back here at Longmeadow with you.”
Unfortunately, that is the only explanation for his absence that Monty gave, with the BBC not addressing the switch in the main presenter.
Adam has taken over main presenter duties before, so it is not completely out of the ordinary for the programme to change its pace.
While unconfirmed, one explanation could be coronavirus restrictions, with the cast and crew remaining in a bubble based on their location.
The second episode’s location has not been confirmed, but Monty most likely couldn’t make the trip to mix with the rest of the team.
Of course, as Monty stated in his farewell monologue to fans, he will be back for the third episode of the show.
Episode three drops on Christmas Eve, December 24, and promises to get viewers in a festive mood.
The synopsis reads: “Monty celebrates the joy that the gardening year brings with a selection of brand-new stories, and the team get into the Christmas spirit.”
2022’s series currently does not have a release date, though it will probably hit a mid-2022 air time.
For now, fans can enjoy the remainder of the winter specials, with plenty of gardening tips still to come.
Gardeners’ World Winter Specials continue on December 17 at 8pm on BBC Two.
