Time is a prison drama that started on BBC One last week, Sunday, June 6. Stephen Graham portrays Eric McNally, a prison officer who is faced with a difficult decision that leads him to question his morals. Playing his on-screen wife Sonia is actress and real-life wife Hannah Walters.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Time.
Graham and Walters are currently starring together in Time on BBC One, playing married couple Eric and Sonia.
They first met in real life while they were training at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance and have been together ever since.
The couple previously worked together on Channel 4’s memorable This is England series with Graham playing Combo and Walters as Trudy.
Fans of Graham’s may not realise though that Walters goes through his potential work first.
Speaking to the press, including Express.co.uk, Walters said she reads all of Graham’s scripts before he does.
This led to a conversation between herself and Time screenwriter Jimmy McGovern with Graham joking they were chatting about the show “before I knew what was going on”.
Besides from Time, McGovern is the mastermind behind the crime anthology series Accused which aired for two seasons on BBC One, with Graham featuring in one episode.
He is also behind series including Moving On, The Street, Cracker and docu-drama Hillsborough which was based on the events of the stadium disaster in 1989.
So when Walters said she had given the award-winning writer some advice, Graham wasn’t impressed.
He explained: “You [Walters] and Jimmy were talking about character development for the two characters before I even read it [the script].
“I was like ‘am I going to be able to read it then?’ and you was like ‘yeah Jimmy’s got a few more bits to do.’
“And I was like why and you went ‘I gave him a little note…only a little one.’
“What?! You gave Jimmy McGovern a note?! What are you doing?’
“‘No, it’s to help develop the story’ [she said] and I was like Ok, Ok.”
