The last ever season of The Walking Dead will finally be hitting screens in just a few short months. With eight new episodes arriving on AMC in August, a new behind-the-scenes teaser trailer has confirmed the epic zombie series is once again in production.
A brand new look at The Walking Dead’s 11th and final season has teased the return of the show’s iconic reformed villain, Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
The role proved a star-making turn for Morgan, who made a brutal impact by killing fan favourite Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) at the start of season seven.
Survived by his wife Maggie (Lauren Cohan), she received the shock of a lifetime when she returned to Alexandria and discovered Negan had been set free.
The former Saviour leader managed to persuade Carol (Melissa McBride) that he’s willing to cooperate by taking down the leader of the Whisperers, Alpha (Samantha Morton).
But, once season 11 gets started, Maggie could once again be out for blood and may need much more convincing not to go after her old enemy.
However, the latest footage from the set of the post-apocalyptic saga’s grand finale has hinted towards a surprising development for Negan and Alexandria’s uneasy alliance.
The new backstage clips suggest Maggie and Negan will be working together as the survivors take the fight underground.
The feuding pair are joined by Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Dog, who seem to be leading an expedition into a walker-infested sewer.
AMC’s brief clip then reveals the series has entered production again, with the first of three batches of eight episodes beginning on August 22.
While co-stars Cohan and Morgan were shown sharing a laugh behind-the-scenes, Maggie and Negan’s on-screen relationship won’t be so amicable.
After briefly departing The Walking Dead in season nine, Maggie returned being pursued by a savage new threat, the Reapers.
Although it was a lengthy battle to contain Negan behind bars, he may need to be let out of his cage for good if Alexandria are to stand a fighting chance in the upcoming war.

While Maggie won’t be happy about raising her son, Hershel (Kien Michael Spiller), in such close proximity to her husband’s killer, chief content officer Scott Gimple confirmed her grudge against Negan won’t be the only thing on her mind.
In a recent TWDUniverse discussion on Twitch, Gimple promised: “It certainly isn’t just about that. She isn’t defined by that.
“It is some pretty crucial business, obviously the end of the episode [‘Here’s Negan’] seems to tell us that it’s nothing to sneeze at.”
Season ten’s bonus finale episode saw Negan reflect on his depressing past after being temporarily banished from Alexandria by Carol.
After recovering his faithful bat, Lucille, the ex-Saviour made his way back to the community, unsure of how his return would be received.
Once season 11 gets underway later this summer, Negan’s presence will certainly cause some friction among Maggie and the rest of the survivors.
However, as ever with The Walking Dead, the fight to stay alive always takes priority, and Glenn’s still-grieving widow will have to put her grievances aside as they prepare to take on the Reapers.
The Walking Dead season 11 premieres Sunday, August 22 on AMC.
