The Little Women Trailer Is a Nostalgic Punch to the Gut

Greta Gerwig proved her aptitude for excavating the mind of a teenage girl with 2017’s nouveau cult favorite Lady Bird. Next, she’s bringing her skill to the ur-text of the genre with her adaptation of Little Women. Frankly, the first trailer for the movie is a nostalgic punch to the gut.

Gerwig compiled an all-star cast of Hollywood’s grandest power plays to populate Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel, including Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Emma Watson as Meg, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, Florence Pugh as Amy, Laura Dern as Marmee, Meryl Streep as Aunt March, and, rudely, Internet Boyfriend Timothée Chalamet as Laurie.

The trailer seems to pay homage to the 1994 Gillian Armstrong classic, including scenes like Meg burning Jo’s hair and, painfully, Jo and Laurie hashing out the prospect of their romantic future. Of course, Gerwig’s version of Little Women takes a heavy hand to the novel’s feminist undertones, with artist Amy announcing, “I want to be great, or nothing,” and a monologue from Ronan’s Jo certain to garner the actress her fourth Oscar nomination.

Little Women hits theaters December 25—just in time for awards season (and to fit in another re-read).
