The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Will Luke save Serena Joy with June’s tapes?

The Handmaid’s Tale may have finished airing on Hulu, but season four has already been confirmed. Fans will remember that Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski) was one of the characters who had a difficult time of it when she was arrested in the finale. There’s a new theory to suggest she could be saved by an unlikely saviour – here’s what you need to know.

Will Luke save Serena Joy with June’s tapes?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season 3

June (Elisabeth Moss) ended season three as a fully-fledged rebel after her dramatic escape plan for the children of Gilead.

This newfound characteristic is likely to continue into season four as she both deals with the consequences of her actions and works out her next move.

A new fan theory has suggested that one way she can spark a rebellion has already been hinted at.

Viewers will remember in episode five, Eleanor Lawrence (Julie Dretzin) revealed to June that Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) used to make her mixtapes.

After this, June records a tape for Luke Bankole (OT Fagbenle) and asks Serena to deliver it when she visits baby Nichole in Canada.

According to a theory proposed by Inverse, these could prove a vital resource in the work of the resistance.

The publication has suggested June could also use this recording software on the cassettes to smuggle information out of Gilead.

Back in the fifth episode, Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) told Serena he would be willing to do a deal with her for information to bring the dystopian state down.

If June were to make the most of this, it is possible Luke could use them to do just this.

He could even negotiate Serena’s freedom as a result, after she was arrested in the season finale.

She was taken in by the authorities after Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) told the authorities she forced June and Nick (Max Minghella) to have sex in order to have a child.

This led the Canadian police to arrest Serena while she is having a supervised visit with the baby.

Therefore, whether Luke would actually want to save her or not is another question as he is no friend of Serena’s.

In fact, the pair have butted heads throughout season three over baby Nichole, who Luke has been looking after with Moira (Samira Wiley).

The only scenario where he might be tempted to do a deal with Serena would be if it were to save June and his daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake).

At this point, it looks like the only way this would be possible is if they were to bring down Gilead.

This is all possible as fans will know that Canada is being tougher on the crimes committed by the state after the arrest of both Serena and Fred this season.

The escape of all of those children and Marthas to Canada is also likely to fuel this fire even more.

Given the Marthas have already begun telling people the mastermind behind this was June, she could come to Tuello’s attention as a potential ally.

Whether this happens or not, the tensions between Canada and Gilead are sure to intensify in the next outing.

This is especially the case as showrunner Bruce Miller has implied the escaped children could spark a revolution.

He told Harper’s Bazaar: “I can’t imagine that all hell isn’t going to break loose.

“Gilead thinks of them as their children, and also the most valuable resource in their world.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu.
