The Crown launched its fourth season on Netflix on November 15 with 10 new episodes of the royal drama series. The fourth season of The Crown may have just been released on Netflix, but fans are already excited about what will happen next.
Viewers will be delighted to learn the series has been confirmed already for a fifth outing.
This will see the show creator Peter Morgan return as it heads into the 1990s.
Season five will also be the penultimate outing for the royal drama when it returns once again.
When is The Crown season 5 released?
An official release date has not yet been confirmed for the fifth season of The Crown.
However, viewers will be hoping to see in 2022 in its usual November slot.
This comes after Deadline confirmed filming would begin in June 2021.
As usual, it is expected the next two seasons will be filmed back-to-back as The Crown comes to an end.
Who is in the cast of The Crown season 5?
Viewers will know well how every two seasons of the Netflix drama the cast changes.
This means Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham-Carter and Tobias Menzies will all be leaving their roles.
Not all of the cast for season five has been revealed but some very key castings have been announced.
Olivier award-winning star Imelda Staunton will be taking on the much-love role of Queen Elizabeth II.

Oscar-nominated actor Lesley Manville is also joining the season five cast as Princess Margaret.
The final piece of news confirmed so far is how The Night Manager and Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana, Princess of Wales.
Another rumoured casting is The Affair’s Dominic West, who it is thought will play Prince Charles.
Fans will also be waiting to hear who will play Camilla Parker Bowles, Princess Anne, John Major and Tony Blair.
What will happen in The Crown season 5?
No confirmed plot details have been announced yet for the fifth season of The Crown next.
However, it is expected to pick up after the fourth season ended in 1990.
Although, there are a number of key moments in this period, which are likely to be covered.
This includes when Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips divorced as well as when Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales announced their separation.
Of course, Diana’s untimely death in a car accident in 1997 will also be covered in the show.
