Strictly Come Dancing professional Johannes Radebe spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about his new TV venture – Celebrity MasterChef – and the impending 2021 series of the nation’s favourite dance competition. The South African dancer and choreographer will be donning his sequins and heels in the hope he can make it to the final and lift the Glitterball Trophy. But who is he going to be partnered with? Johannes discussed who is ideal celebrity would be and the qualities he looks for in the celebrity in order for both of them to have the best time ever on the show.
Before the celebrity line-up was announced Johannes said he wasn’t feeling nervous about the new series.
“I have to say, I don’t know whether it’s my trajectory, but I’m excited, I’m excited about it, I’m looking forward to it, there hasn’t been much for me [to get excited about] this past year and I’ve had to settle in the United Kingdon and there hasn’t been anything fun to do.
“The fact we get to go out again and live in the sparkly world – I can’t tell you, it brings me so much joy – the opportunity to do it with others and go on this journey with somebody that I would love to know who it is.
“And just the possibility of taking somebody all the way to the finals this year – I’m really looking forward to it.
“I feel I’ve settled in the United Kingdom and now it’s time for me to live my best life!” He added.
As for who he would love to be partnered with, Johannes said: “I was just saying, Michelle Visage has done the show from RuPaul’s Drag Race… RuPaul, it’s time for RuPaul to step up.
“I think that would be something that people are not ready for! I think RuPaul would be fantastic, I would love to see that.
“Or… Sam Smith…he’s become a dancer now… he loves movement.”
Johannes also said he looks for “kindness and perseverance” in a celebrity partner because “those two things go a long way”.
Earlier this month, the BBC announced John Whaite had signed up to the 2021 series.
The television chef – best known for winning the third series of The Great British Bake Off back in 2012 – said he is going to be partnered with a male professional dancer and John said it’s an “honour” to be making show history.
“When they asked me if I’d be interested, I just bit their hand off, because to do that and represent the LGBTQ+ community is one thing, but to see two men or two women dancing together, it’s not about sexuality, it’s about intimacy and respect,” John explained.
“I think that’s going to be such a great thing in our culture where men are conditioned not to open up and be emotional, I think it might help combat that.
“I’m really excited to be in the first all-male partnership, I think it hasn’t quite sunk in yet and I don’t think it will until I find out who I’m dancing with.”
As for who he is hoping for – because of his height, being 6’2” – he wants someone tall and Johannes is just that.
Johannes and Graziano Di Prima danced together back in 2019 while Emeli Sande sung behind them.
Having spoken out about wanting to dance with the same sex, with Johannes be coupled up with John this year?
Before Strictly returns to television screens, fans of Johannes can see him taking part in Celebrity MasterChef.
And as for why he wanted to give it a go, Johannes said: “I wanted to prove to myself I can do it!
“The I first heard about it, [I was like] ’No, I’m not doing it’ because I wasn’t very confident in my cooking.
“But I couldn’t miss the opportunity because my family are the biggest fans of the show,” he added.
Strictly Come Dancing returns this autumn to the BBC and Johannes stars in Celebrity MasterChef this week.
