Stranger Things season 3: What happened to Hopper at the end?

Netflix’s latest series of Stranger Things is proving to be a hit with fans after landing on July 4. Season three of Stranger Things has eight episodes in total which were available to binge in one go. The last episode of season three is called Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt and sees some characters getting killed off as Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends take on the Mind Flayer again. But the big plot point from the Netflix show that has left fans scratching their heads is the fate of beloved police chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour).

Is Hopper dead in Stranger Things?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Stranger Things season 3

Hopper seemed to meet his maker in the Stranger Things season three finale after he helped to fight the Mind Flayer.

While Eleven and co. fought off the resurrected Mind Flayer in the Starcourt Mall, Hopper was down in the bowels of the building with Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) trying to close the rift between the world and the Upside Down.

Hopper was seen successfully shutting the wormhole between the two dimensions but not before there was a massive explosion which seemed to kill the character.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF STRANGER THINGS?

The police chief wasn’t seen afterwards with the implication he’d been killed as the Russian equipment shut down.

However, all hope didn’t appear to be lost after Stranger Things revealed an end credits scene that hinted Hopper could have survived.

The end credits took us back to the USSR and the scientific/military base in Kamchatka, Russia.

Audiences were shown the prison and two guards who were tasked with taking one figure from their cell.

As one of the guards opened the door, the other said to him: “No. Not the American.”

The guard then removed a different prisoner, who was dragged off to be sacrificed to a Demogorgon.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 ENDING EXPLAINED

The mention of “the American” has left many fans wondering and lots of people took to Reddit to discuss the moment.

Reddit user couchtimes posted: “I was on the verge of tears the entire scene of Eleven reading the note but when the post credits scene came up and they said “The American” I regained some hope! I think our boy Hopper is still kicking just in a whole heap of trouble.”

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3?

While another user called rjsheine said: “I’m glad they did it like that so it wouldn’t seem like plot armor. I was so upset Hopper died that it showed how much I really want him alive.”

A third person called miyamaniac explained: “This is hardly a conspiracy theory, they spoiled him being alive in the post cred scene by calling him the American.

“They should’ve left it out to leave us wondering, or they should’ve simply said “not that one” when one of the soldiers reached out for the door where they keep Hop prisoner. It would still be a dead giveaway, but less so than now.

“Unless it’s a completely new character, which is unlikely, it’s impossible to be anyone other than Hop. That’s just basic storytelling rules lol.”

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 EASTER EGGS

But others thought the American could actually refer to Dr Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), who was in season one and had been conducting experiments on Eleven to help spy on the Russians.

“Brenner is a decent contender, though I’m not sure why he would be in a Russian prison or why we’d even care about it if that turned out to be true,” theorised miyamaniac.

User SlackerAtWork said: “Someone else pointed out that Brenner was dragged away by a demodog (or demogorgon? I can’t remember which). And they have a demogorgon in Russia. So, could possibly be that they somehow found Brenner and the demogorogon that dragged him in there and captured them both. That was basically the gist of their Brenner theory, at least explaining how/why they have Brenner.”
