Strictly Come Dancing week one kicked off on Saturday night with the 13 celebrities taking to the dancefloor on the BBC programme. Greg Wise, who is partnered with Karen Hauer, took on the American Smooth for their first dance, however, Shirley Ballas was less than pleased with his first performance.

After dancing, Shirley gave her feedback and said: “I’m a sucker for a man in a tail suit, you’re suave, your cool, your calm and your collected and charismatic and great in the open hold.

“But too many, you’re on the wrong side of the body, the footwork is not in the right place there was too much rise and fall.

“You do have the talent absolutely, do you have charisma, 100 per cent, but you have to have some fundamentals for me,” she explained.

Commenting on Shirley’s judgment, Tess said: “Shirley’s been very tough tonight, it is only week one, I personally I’m loving this partnership.”

“Week one but we’ve seen some fundamentals, we’ve seen some which is important for me just a few. I’m not asking for a lot but just a few,” she elaborated.

He received some of the highest scores of the competition so far from the judges, achieving a total of 24 after new judge Anton Du Beke awarded him a seven.

Greg was cheered on by his wife and fellow actor Emma Thompson as he made his Strictly Come Dancing debut.

Strictly fans took to Twitter to discuss their happiness for Greg, with @GorgeousGregW commenting: “Greg was amazing, I can’t wait to see what he brings us next!”

@RachelMcGrath also wrote: “Greg Wise is clearly having the time of his life, that was so fun, and I am on the verge of tears #Strictly.”

“I knew I’d love him, and #GregWise didn’t disappoint,” @DrFahy_Anthro added.

Commenting on the Shirley Ballas’ critiques, @gutureretroclub said: “Who upset Shirley Ballas tonight #GregWise.”

However, Greg’s Strictly journey could be cut short as bookmakers predict he could be the first celebrity to be eliminated.

Despite there not being an elimination during Saturday night’s opening, bookmakers Gambling.com tipped Greg to be eliminated at 11/4.

EastEnders’ actress Rose Ayling-Ellis is also the bookmakers favourite to win the series.

Speaking about the latest odds, Gambling.com spokesperson Darren Hughes said: “While Rose Ayling-Ellis is the current bookies’ favourite to win this year’s competition, there’s also plenty of speculation as to who the first celebrity to get their marching orders will be.”

He explained: “Greg Wise, the current favourite to be first eliminated at odds of 11/4.

“The legendary actor isn’t fancied by punters to translate his silver screen skills to the ballroom and think he may be the first one to hang up his sequins.”

According to Gambling.com, Ugo Monye is the second favourite to be booted from the show.

Loose Women’s Judi and Sara Davies are close behind the rugby player with odds of 9/2 and 11/2 at being tipped for an early exit.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
