‘Shining Girls’ Season 1 Episode 3 recap: Kirby and Dan discover 8 women have stories like Kirby’s

“Overnight,” which began streaming on April 29, 2022, according to Apple TV+, along with the first two episodes, has Kirby and Dan digging deeper into what happened. Except they’re not focused on Julia Madrigal (Karen Rodriguez) or the details of Kirby’s attack.

This time they sift through old case files searching for women who might’ve been murdered by the same man, making him a serial killer. Kirby and Dan go through horrific photographs and notes to determine whether or not they’re all connected.

Hours later, they have a list of eight women who may have died at the hands of Bell’s character Harper. Although, it’s important to note that Dan and Kirby don’t know the man’s name at this point. Unbeknownst to Dan, he’s already met the man they’re trying to find.

Also, during their time at the evidence warehouse, Kirby discovers her belongings that now reside on a shelf in a cardboard box. She wants to take the yellow matchbook from her attack. However, Dan convinces her otherwise, saying she’ll want it as evidence in a trial.

Dan is being watched

The book-to-TV adaptation continues with an explanation of Dan’s bloody arm in the opening scene. Turns out, he went to a bar where the bartender put his car keys in a bowl. Upon retrieving them, Dan notices not all of his keys were there. He brushes it off and gets his car to realize the driver’s seat has been moved. Plus, there’s a tape playing that doesn’t belong to him.

Later, Dan doesn’t think anything of it when some books in his house are disheveled. He simply sets them right and moves on. But, as viewers learn, the man he and Kirby are searching for has been inside his house. After talking to his son under the guise of being a colleague, the man returns to Dan’s house. He stumbles upon crime scene photographs, letting him know that Dan and Kirby are on his trail.

Back to the cut on Dan’s arm. Courtesy of flashbacks, viewers learn Dan left the bar and caught a train home. In the process, he fell and injured himself. Bell’s character, who happened to be right behind Dan, helped him up. “Did you find the guy that killed Julia?” the man asked. “Why do you care?” Dan replied.

Because, the man said, she was killed four blocks from his house. He worries about his son, he added, whom he never leaves home alone. Just as the train arrived, the man grabbed the collar of Dan’s shirt, showing just how easily he could kill him.

Kirby meets another woman who was attacked

At the Adler Planetarium Kirby learns, like her, Jin-Sook, played by Dopesick’s Phillipa Soo, survived. She asks Jin-Sook about her locker keys, showing her a photo. Suddenly, things change. Kirby has longer hair.

When Jin-Sook says she lost her keys a week ago, Kirby replies, “You couldn’t have lost these last week. The photo is from 1972.” After a moment’s pause Jin-Sook brushes Kirby off and walks away.

A new episode of Shining Girls begins streaming on Apple TV+ every Friday.
