'Sex and the City' Reboot: Will Carrie and Big Split Up in 'And Just Like That'?

Sex and the City fans are got the news that they had been waiting for in early 2021 when HBO announced that it would be rebooting the series for a special revival. The reboot, titled And Just Like That..., has been confirmed by not only HBO, but three of the show’s original stars as well, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis all revealing that they would be reprising the roles of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte.

With additional details on the show scarce at best, fans are searching for clues everywhere that they can. And several signs point to the possibility that Carrie and Mr. Big, the show’s flagship couple, could be headed for a breakup.

Carrie and Big’s romance was one of the central storylines of ‘Sex and the City’

Sex and the City premiered on HBO in 1998. Based on Candace Bushnell’s best-selling book, the show focused on New York City-based columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her three friends: Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha.

The four friends navigate the difficulties of love, career, and family, all while nourishing their relationships with each other. In the end, it is their friendship that is the central theme of the series.

Still, many other love stories were featured in the series over the years, including the romance between Carrie and Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth. Throughout the series run, fans watched as Carrie and Big started dating, broke up, reconnected, and broke up again before committing to each other in grand fashion in the series finale.

In spite of the fact that Carrie and Big were married in the feature-length films, the course of love has never run smoothly for the couple. And some fans are suspecting that in the upcoming reboot, Carrie and Big could split for good.

What do fans know about Mr. Big being in the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot?

At first, Noth dropped a few hints on his Instagram, suggesting that he could possibly be in the series. Parker also said fans should “wait and see” whether the character of Mr. Big will be in And Just Like That….which has left many fans wondering why the showrunners are being so cagey since Carrie and Mr. Big were married when they last saw the characters.

Last week, Deadline confirmed Noth’s return to the franchise to reprise his role. Executive producer Michael Patrick King said: “I’m thrilled to be working with Chris again on And Just Like That…. How could we ever do a new chapter of the Sex and the City story without our Mr. Big?”

Will Big and Carrie split up in the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot?

The prevailing fan theory that has emerged, in the wake of all the rumors, is the one that suggests Carrie and Mr. Big could be broken up in the Sex and the City reboot. The door is certainly open for that possibility, since Carrie’s longtime boyfriend, Aidan Shaw, was brought back into the picture in Sex and the City 2, with the two characters even sharing a forbidden kiss after reconnecting in Abu Dhabi. It is very possible that showrunners could feature a storyline where Carrie and Aidan reconnect after so many years.

Adding fuel to the rumor is the fact that John Corbett, who plays Aidan Shaw, has spoken out to confirm that he will playing a substantial role in the reboot. “I’m going to do the show,” Corbett revealed to PageSix, admitting that he will be in “quite a few” episodes.

While HBO hasn’t confirmed Corbett’s involvement, it seems clear that fans can expect Aidan to show up in some surprising ways in And Just Like That…which could mean the end for Carrie and Big. And while Noth is returning, it’s not clear in what capacity and for how long.

Adding fuel to fire is long-standing speculation that a third film would have seen Big dying or splitting with Carrie. Both options are technically still on the table with Noth’s reprisal of the role.
