Former TfL board member Steve Norris has hit out at Sadiq Khan, saying he is “playing to the metropolitan woke” and “all about politics” by expanding ULEZ zones. The slamming came after the Mayor of London expanded ULEZ zones to all areas within the North and South Circular roads in an attempt to boost air quality.
Speaking to LBC’s Nick Ferrari, Steve Norris said: “I think Sadiq Khan will think that this is playing to the people like your last speaker-the kind of metropolitan woke, none of whom have any problem of course with their cars because I’m sure they’re all okay.
“My cars are okay. They’re not going to be affected.
“The real tragedy here is that one in five of Londoners who probably bought a diesel car incidentally now find themselves you know, having to use a car because the tradespeople, because they needed to do their jobs to literally keep their families.
“And they’re suddenly going to be faced with a huge amount of money.”

He went on: “You know, this kind of charge. If you take it five days a week. That’s a massive amount. Massive, massive amount.
“And look, this idea of saying ‘it kills 40,000 people a year’.
“We’ll set that aside because I think that’s a massive exaggeration. It’s nothing like that.
“Clearly quality of air has some sort of impact on every single one of us.”
The host interjected: “That’s what campaigners say, Steve, all these people they want to breathe fresh clean air.”
Mr Norris said: “I would say to them, that’s absolutely right. But you have to be proportionate about these things.
“If, for example, TfL had actually announced their own scrappage scheme. I don’t see why a taxpayer in Doncaster should be paying for Sadiq Khan’s a great initiatives.
“If he had announced a decent scrappage scheme. Perhaps this might have been acceptable.
He continued: “But I think the way that he’s done it, the fact that he’s done it for, you know, 24 hours a day seven days a week, and giving this Christmas day off, thanks for nothing, is just absolutely appalling.
“And it just demonstrates that this guy is all about politics.
“He’s got no idea how ordinary Londoners live and frankly, if he does, he clearly doesn’t care.
ULEZ has operated since April 2019, it now includes all areas within the North and South Circular roads in an attempt to boost air quality
The charge applies all day, every day, except on Christmas Day.
