Kate’s world was turned upside down in March 2020 when her husband Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital with coronavirus. Since then, the father-of-two has remained in a coma following complications from the virus and although he’s made small steps with his recovery, the doctors are still unsure as to the full extent of the damage the illness has had on his body.

The one-off special, titled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, will see the presenter showing never-seen-before footage of her husband in his steps to recovery.

The documentary, which will air on March 23, will be the first time that the public has seen Derek since he was hospitalised.

Kate will also speak candidly about the devastating toll the last year has had on her and the couple’s children.

The 53-year-old admitted her husband’s condition has worsened dramatically and he has lost eight stone during his time in hospital.

Speaking in a new interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, Kate told family friend Decca Aitkenhead: “The change in his body is shocking.

“You’re going to be shocked, Decca.

“The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought this is a horror story.

“I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know.”

The 53-year-old went on to add doctors have told her that it’s highly unlikely that Derek will “make a good recovery”.

They told the GMB host they can’t rule out a “reasonable recovery” although, she has questioned what that will look like.

At one point, Kate said she was sitting on the phone waiting to hear whether her beloved husband had died or not.

“It turned out that somebody had died who had a similar name to his,” she added.
