The Handmaid’s Tale came to a close this week (June 16) giving fans the most shocking finale to date. The last episode closed the door on one of the show’s long-running plot threads. But is the show finished for good?

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the season four finale.

Is The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 the final season?

After the season four finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, fans have been left wondering about the end of the series.

The finale ended by completing a character arc that had been running since the start of season one.

Fred Waterford (played by Joseph Fiennes) had been a primary antagonist in the series and season four saw the exit for the character.

June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) along with many other handmaids killed Waterford, bringing a four-season story arc to a close.

However, this is not the end of the series, as there is still plenty more story to come for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Hulu has already confirmed the series will be back for season five, along with confirming that the show is also getting a spin-off – The Testaments.

The details surrounding season five remain vague, though the fifth season is expected to drop in early 2022.

It also isn’t known if this will be the last season for the show, with Hulu not confirming if the series will receive more seasons to follow.

However, they could be preparing to wrap on the show, as they confirmed the spin-off series, The Testaments, was also in production.

This is based on Margaret Atwood’s sequel to her original novel, also titled The Handmaid’s Tale.

This sequel takes place 15 years after the original events of the book, meaning that the television adaptation could only come after the first series ends.

Since its announcement in 2019, Hulu has remained quiet on the show and the future of the original series.

Series showrunner Bruce Miller recently told The Hollywood Reporter: Every time I come upon a season, I don’t know what we’re going to do. And every time we get to the end, I’m thrilled and feel like we could go on forever and ever.”

With season four now behind fans, there is a lot to be excited about in the Handmaid’s Tale universe, with Miller confirming that there is no desire to end the series.

All the main cast are likely to return for season five, though details on any newcomers are still unknown.

There isn’t a trailer for season five, with the next season still in production.

Fans should expect more news on the continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale soon now that season four has aired fully.

Fans have been discussing the finale of season four on social media, with many of them heading to Twitter to share their thoughts on the latest season.

One fan said: “The Handmaids Tale season finale really had me jamming out to music whilst watching an incredibly brutal death.”

Another fan added: “Remembering that was the finale and we now have to wait a whole year for another season of the Handmaid’s Tale.”

A third fan commented: “I wish I knew someone I could talk to about The Handmaids Tale bc…that finale tho!” (sic)

The Handmaid’s Tale is available to watch on Hulu and Channel 4.
