The final episode of the latest series saw June Osborne and her fellow handmaids attack Commander Fred Waterford (played by Joseph Fiennes) in the woods of Gilead in an act of revenge for the years of abuse he’d inflicted on them. Looking towards season five and reflecting on the brutal series final, actress Elisabeth Moss bid an emotional farewell to her co-star Joseph.
Elisabeth remarked: “Being there when we were shooting 10 and being there in the woods when we were shooting the salvaging itself, just as he does everything, he really did put 110 percent into his final moments in this passionate enthusiastic, caring way.
“He’s always been a very thoughtful actor, as anyone knows who’s worked with him.
“He’s very thoughtful about every line but he really embraced it in this way that was so cool and inspiring.
“Even the fact that he just ran and ran and ran and he had us ben trouble but he did so much of it himself.
“There’s a shot in episode 10 where he slips and falls as he’s coming around a corner and that was him, not a stunt double.
“The woman behind him playing June is a stunt double! I’ve done plenty of running in this show.”
Elisabeth continued: “But he was just so inspiring and fun working with him as an actor and then as a director was just, I’m going to miss him.
“But I think we all send him off with love.”
Many fans were thrilled to see the end of Fred but it seems some are worried his presence will still be felt in the next series.
After killing the Commander, June returned home to Canada and baby Nichole, who she hugged while still covered in Fred’s blood.
Some fans have expressed concern this is a clue Fred will be revealed as Nichole’s real father.
Both June and Fred’s wife believed he was unable to have children until Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) learned she was pregnant.
Could Nichole be Fred’s child and not Nick Blaine’s (Max Minghella)?
Taking to Reddit to share their theories, one viewer posted: “When I got to the scene where June is spreading the blood on Nichole I asked why is the show is showing June getting blood on Nichole? What does it mean?
“Could it also be foreshadowing, as in is Fred’s blood in Nichole?
“June thinks she is rid of Fred at the end of the season finale but his blood is physically on Nicole, if you think that Fred could be the father this is probably the most tangible foreshadowing of that.”
Fans were quick to comment with many insisting it was simply a sign of June’s sacrifices for her daughter.
“I think it could be a way for June to show Nichole that she did it for her,” one replied.
“Like here is the blood of the man that hurt you also.
“So when she comes home with Fred’s blood she’s showing the sacrifice she’s had to make to be a good mother and getting justice for not only her but her children.”
