ON Sunday, actor, producer, and television director Dwayne Hickman, best remembered for his portrayal as Dobie Gillis in the 1950s-960s comedy The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, died.
The Los Angeles native was 87 years old.
How did Dwayne Hickman die?
Hickman died of complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to the New York Times.
According to a statement from a family spokesperson, B. Harlan Boll, Hickman died on Sunday at his home in Los Angeles.
When he died, he was surrounded by family members, according to the report.
Hickman died on January 9, which also happened to be the birthdate of his friend and co-star on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Bob Denver, who died in 2005 at the age of 70.
Who was Dwayne Hickman?
Hickman was born on May 18, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, and made his cinematic debut in The Boy With the Green Hair and The Grapes of Wrath in the 1940s.
He played Chuck MacDonald in The Bob Cummings Show as a teenager, co-starring with the titular comic during the show's four-year run.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, starring Hickman, premiered in 1959.
The actor appeared in every episode of the 20th Century Fox sitcom, which aired for a total of 148 episodes.
Dobie Gillis established Hickman as one of the earliest and most important cultural icons for the Baby Boomer generation in the 1950s and 1960s as the first major television series to feature teens as its main characters.
After graduating from Loyola University with a degree in economics in the 1960s, Hickman returned to acting in films including How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, Ski Party, and Cat Ballou.
In the 1970s, Hickman worked for CBS Television as a network executive. During his ten-year tenure, he oversaw films including Maude, M*A*S*H, and Designing Women.

Was Dwayne Hickman married?
Hickman has been married three times throughout his life.
Once to actress Carol Christensen, and then to singer Joanne Papile.
He married Joan Roberts in 1983, and they were married for the rest of his life. She, as well as the couple’s two sons Albert and John, survive Hickman.
