Dan Beasley-Harling first shot to fame when he was a contestant on the Great British Bake Off in 2019. Although he wasn’t crowned the winner, he did gain three of the highly sought after Hollywood handshakes from the show’s judge, Paul Hollywood.

In a new interview with Coffee Friend, Dan opened up about what it was like taking part in the competition.

He also revealed what judge Paul is really like behind the scenes.

“I think Paul understands he gets a bit of traction for being the bad cop,” Dan began.

“He does play up to that a bit. The judges have very specific tastes and you have to cater to that because they make the decisions.”

He continued: “You have to bake for the judges. Whatever you think about the judges, it’s a bit of a waste of time to say that they’re wrong because it’s not going to get you anywhere.”

“They rule the roost,” the budding baker added.

During last week’s Bake Off, in which Paul continues to hold his role as judge, devastated viewers watched as a 19-year-old vegan baker Freya was eliminated from the competition.

While fans felt sorry when Freya’s journey came to an end, Dan went on to reveal why he didn’t think she would have won.

He pointed out that it is much harder to bake vegan treats. Despite the fact you can swap out milk and butter, Dan said it is far more challenging to bake without eggs.

He explained: “Baking vegan is like learning to bake all over again. It’s very difficult, it’s hard to replicate the same textures or lightness.

“I actually didn’t think Freya could ever win because she made things far too difficult for herself.”

“It’s a shame that she received criticism for not using all vegan products,” he concluded.

The current series of The Great British Bake Off is well underway, and the most recent episode saw the remaining contestants go head-to-head in Pastry week.

The bakers had to make choux pastry doughnuts, a Turkish technical, and something savoury for pastry week.

For the final challenge, the contestants were tasked with creating a savoury, flavourful and delicately designed pastry.

However, it didn’t go to plan for all of the budding bakers.

In hopes of winning the competition to win the title of Britain’s Best Amateur Baker, George made a Christmas Dinner bake.

Despite Prue Leith complimenting his dish, Paul questioned whether the sausage meat was cooked at all.

“It’s underbaked and it’s collapsed down,” Paul told him as George admitted: “I got it in the oven late which is unfortunate.”

“That sausage meat, I question whether it’s cooked,” Paul added as he tasted the dish.

George was quick to try and reassure him stating: “I probed it three times Paul, 92 in the centre.”

The Great British Bake Off returns on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
