In Friends: The Reunion, a night of fun and games alongside a heavy dose of nostalgia, delighted fans of the beloved NBC sitcom series. Originally released on HBO Max in the USA, its UK broadcaster Sky One has now revealed that the long-awaited reunion episode was the most-watched show ever on the network, with millions tuning in.

Fans of Friends got what they wanted in the one-night special as the megahit series has retained its popularity ever since it burst onto screens in 1994.

Friends: The Reunion reunited original stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer after 17 years off-air.

It was an emotional night as one by one, the six cast members returned to the iconic set on the Warner Brothers Studios lot for the first time since 2004.

The six world-famous actors delivered a heavy dose of nostalgia as they each took a trip down memory lane.

Sky One has now revealed that Friends fans have broken viewing figures in the UK alone, with 5.3 million viewers tuning in for the highly-anticipated reunion.

The HBO Max episode was made available in the UK exclusively on Sky and the streaming service Now TV, and the reunion drew in the biggest ever audience in Sky One’s history.

It is unsurprising that the special broke record viewing figures as the series is one of the most beloved television series of all time.

Since the final episode aired in 2004, the sitcom is on repeat daily so fans have been able to get their Friends fix for almost two decades since.

However, it was a reunion that fans really wanted and the stars had frequently dodged questions about reuniting for years before coming together for the one-off special.

Scheduling was often cited as the primary reason the cast couldn’t get back together again, but there was also reluctance to revisit the show that made them famous as cast and crew were worried they would destroy the show’s legacy by returning.

A one-off reunion special seemed the most ideal type of return as the cast could reminisce about the series, and reveal behind-the-scenes details alongside the creators.

Despite being close friends off-screen, the reunion was the first time all six stars have been in the same room on-screen in 17 years.

James Corden hosted the show and interviewed the six actors about working on the series and their friendship over the years.

During the show, the cast did a table read of famous Friends scenes, and David Schwimmer was seen laughing hysterically at Lisa Kudrow’s perfect reenactment of when Phoebe found out about Monica (played by Courteney Cox) and Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) relationship.

A series of guest stars and dedicated fans also revealed their favourite moments and jokes from the series.

Series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane discussed the creation of the series, as well as the casting process, saying they couldn’t believe that they discovered the perfect actors for each part.

Kauffman and Crane said the series was heavily inspired by their respective romantic lives in New York when they were in their twenties.

Host Corden was joined by famous guests Kit Harington, David Beckham, Justin Bieber, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevinge, and Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga performed the infamous Smelly Cat song with Kudrow, and Harington and Beckham revealed their favourite scenes from the series.

Former Friends guest stars appeared as well, including Elliot Gould, Larry Hankin, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, and Reese Witherspoon.

Friends: The Reunion is available to watch on Now TV.
