This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby welcomed Matthew Wright onto Monday’s show for a discussion about traveling during the coronavirus pandemic. They informed viewers of what the current travel restrictions are for the UK. But, when Matthew suggested there might be a way to bend the rules, host Phillip called him out on his remark.

Matthew began discussing the 100,000 Brits flying abroad to Spain as the amber list country has now begun to welcome UK holidaymakers.

He said: “Before everybody sort of throws their toys out the pram about the hundred thousand people getting on planes to Spain, you are allowed to have business meetings if you have property abroad.

“As far as I understand, I checked just before we came on air, something between 800,000 and one million Brits have property in Spain.

“The Prime Minister’s father has been in and out of the country all the way through Covid visiting his property in Greece.

“So as far as I’m concerned these hundred thousand people have got business meetings.

“They’re going about their legitimate business,” he explained, in an attempt to justify the travel to Spain.

Clearly skeptical about what Matthew was saying, Phillip asked: “But what if they haven’t?”

“Then they’re going to tell everyone they’ve got business meetings” Matthew replied while laughing.

“What? You’re encouraging people to lie as they leave the country?” A shocked Phillip asked.

Matthew responded: “Well I’m just saying that if the Prime Minister’s dad is allowed to come and go out of this country without any sort of restrictions on him…”

But, Holly quickly interrupted him saying: “Yeah but he says that’s for good reasons.

“I mean he says he has a legitimate reason for that I have to say,” she clarified.

Matthew hit back saying: “Still we need to interview those people as they leave. ‘Do you have a property in Spain? Do you have a legitimate business reason for going?’

“Rather than just saying you shouldn’t go,” the presenter explained.

A number of viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Matthew’s comments, with many disagreeing with him.

Some fans criticised the star’s comparisons with the Prime Minister’s father Stanley Johnson.

“#ThisMorning Matthew Wright is disgusting. Please get rid of him. I’m sick of his smug face and his despicable comments,” one viewer wrote.

“Matthew Wright just appeared on @thismorning and as usual criticised Boris and his father re travel abroad during covid,” a third commented.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
