Over the past few weeks, Emmerdale viewers have watched as Bernice (played by Samantha Giles) has suffered from a range of health symptoms including hot flushes. In scenes set to air next week, her unusual behaviour escalates resulting in a trip to the doctor’s surgery.
Recently, Bernice hasn’t been feeling quite herself as she struggles to cope with day-to-day life.
Despite being able to keep her calm, things are about to get too much for her resulting in a sudden outburst which prompts her friends to step in.
Next week, viewers will see Bernice become flustered while at the salon when Bear (Joshua Richards) makes an ill-advised joke that doesn’t go down all too well.
Instantly retaliating, she picks up the hose to squirt him but her aim isn’t quite accurate and she accidentally hits Mandy Dingle’s (Lisa Riley) new potential client.
Both Mandy and Bear are horrified by Bernice’s actions as she quickly turns the water off after it soaks the client.
Overcome with emotion, she storms out of the salon leaving both Mandy and Bear bemused as to what just happened.
Later on, she confides in Bob (Tony Audenshaw) about how she’s been feeling recently as he consoles her.
Listening with a sympathetic ear, he urges Bernice to make an appointment with the doctor over her behaviour to try and get to the root of the issue.
Although things take a turn when bursts into tears which leaves Bob even more concerned about what’s happening.
Making matters worse, Gabby, (Rosie Bentham) makes Bernice feel even more anxious when she convinces her that she may have dementia.
However, Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) suggests that her symptoms are more than likely being caused by menopause, which Bernice is instantly in denial over.
Her rage is amplified when her ex-partner and doctor Liam (Jonny McPherson) reveals that although she doesn’t have dementia, it is most likely menopause.
A theory by Express.co.uk suggests that Liam steps in to help Bernice as she navigates her way through her diagnosis.
Earlier this year, fans saw the doctor cheat on his wife Leyla Cavanagh (Roxy Shahidi) when he kissed Bernice following Leyla’s stint in rehab.
Despite the salon owner insisting she wouldn’t be the other woman, could her erratic behaviour cloud her judgement as she seeks comfort in the arms of an ex?
Bernice’s return to the show has rocked Liam after he last saw her the night before their wedding in 2019 when she left for Australia to look after her ex-husband.
Speaking about her character’s return, Samantha said: “I’m a big believer in fate so when Emmerdale offered me the chance to return as Bernice I took it as a sign that it was meant to be.
“I’m delighted to be returning to play out Bernice’s future storylines which I’m sure are going to keep the audience entertained.
“She certainly arrives back with a bang, that’s all I’m allowed to say right now and I’m looking forward to releasing my next two books whilst juggling her hectic on-screen life.”
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV
