Linda Carter (played by Kellie Bright) and Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) are moving forward as a couple by selling the Queen Vic after almost splitting up for good at the start of the year on EastEnders. However, as the landlady struggles to get a grip on her alcoholism, her sponsor, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), oversteps the mark while pining for his estranged wife Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) to return home.

During the BBC soap’s 35th anniversary week, Linda and Mick almost lost their lives during the tragic boat crash.

In the lead up to the party, the couple’s marriage was in the rocks with Linda serving her husband divorce papers.

However, after the tragic incident, the couple realised they loved each other and wanted to work on their marriage.

Linda vowed to give up alcohol and her one and only slip-up made the pair realise it was time to sell the Queen Vic.

After learning of the couple’s decision from Shirley Carter (Linda Henry), Phil gave Mick an offer but Linda wanted to refuse.

The landlady struggled to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) turned up and set off to find a meeting of her own.

However, when she realised her new meeting was attended by Phil, the landlady clammed up and refused to speak in front of the group.

Linda told Phil she wouldn’t sell him the pub unless he agreed to switch meetings but the Mitchell hardman told Mick she was using him as an excuse not to attend AA.

Furious with his observation, Linda stormed over to confront him but the pair shared a heart-to-heart on the reality of being a recovering alcoholic.

The landlady asked Phil if he would be her sponsor in exchange for the Queen Vic and he agreed.

However, Linda’s sobriety may come at the cost of her marriage as she leans on Phil for support.

Sharon and Phil’s romance throughout the years has been plagued with affairs and history may well repeat itself if the stalwart’s best friend has an affair with the Mitchell hardman.

Both Sharon and Phil have a reputation for being involved in cheating scandals that involve their best friends or their partner’s best friends.

Sharon and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) got married in 1991 before splitting when he discovered her affair with Phil.

Months later, Sharon’s best friend, Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell) fell pregnant following a one-night stand with Grant.

Elsewhere, Phil fathered a child with Lisa Fowler (Lucy Benjamin) but this didn’t stop him from having a one-night stand with her best friend, Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite).

Sharon is currently in Australia after announcing to her estranged husband she needs time to think whether she wants to work on their marriage.

With Sharon away from the Square, Phil remains in the dark over whether his marriage will be saved.

Meanwhile, Linda may be abandoned on her journey to sobriety as Mick will be preoccupied with selling the Queen Vic and finding a new home for the Carters.

Could Linda’s road to recovery lead to her embarking on an affair with fellow addict Phil?

EastEnders continues Monday on BBC One at 8pm.
