After over a year of rumours, former Peter Parker stars Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home opposite Tom Holland. But now alleged insider reports claim they’re far from done with the latter apparently set to return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the next MCU movie on Marvel’s release slate. Interestingly, Benedict Cumberbatch’s solo sequel is directed by Sam Raimi, who helmed Maguire’s original Spider-Man trilogy.

FandomWire, who correctly scooped that both Maguire and Garfield’s Peter Parkers would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, also reported the claim that the original Web-Slinger will be in Doctor Strange 2 around the same time last year.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ first teaser trailer was the post-credits scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The big reveal was that the villain appears to be the lead’s evil variant known as Strange Supreme.

The Sam Raimi movie is rumoured to have put in lots of cameos during recent reshoots, with speculation rife that Sony and Fox superheroes will be making appearances.

It’s unclear at this stage what Maguire’s alleged role in Doctor Strange 2 will be.

However, fans of the Sam Raimi trilogy will remember that the sorcerer was mentioned in Spider-Man 2.

With this in mind, perhaps his non-Avengers variant from that Sony universe will feature in the Multiverse of Madness.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s a new report that Maguire’s Spider-Man 4, which originally was supposed to be made, is now in the works at Sony.

Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire stars in trailer for 2002 film

Giant Freakin Robot’s trusted and proven sources claim the studio are now considering making Spider-Man 4 after Spider-Man: No Way Home’s incredible success.

The multiverse movie has had the second-biggest opening in movie history behind Avengers Endgame, surpassing Avengers Infinity War. This is an incredible feat considering the ongoing pandemic’s effect on people attending cinemas.

Holland’s third solo MCU outing has only been out for a week and has already made over $751 million worldwide.

Interestingly, the current idea for Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 is as an animated movie, in the style of the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

If Spider-Man 4 is animated, this means the movie could be set before the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, when Maguire and his Peter Parker were younger.

Such a sequel could kick off right after the events of the not so fondly remembered Spider-Man 3.

Aside from Maguire, there’s been calls from fans on social media for Garfield to be given his The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Perhaps he could take on Tom Hardy’s Venom outside of the MCU if such a sequel gets off the ground?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas on May 6, 2022.
