GMB: Kris Marshall on his decision to leave Death in Paradise
Kris Marshall played the role of Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise from 2013 until 2017. He left the series in 2017 but fans are hoping he will make a comeback for the show’s 10th anniversary. Luckily, there are plenty of clues pointing to his potential return. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.
Will Kris Marshall make a surprise return to Death in Paradise?
Humphrey Goodman is alive
At the end of Death in Paradise series six, Humphrey Goodman bid farewell to the island of Saint Marie after he fell in love with Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton).
He decided to follow Martha back to London and was replaced by new DI, Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon).
Unlike his predecessor DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller), Humphrey Goodman was kept alive by the show creators.
Poole was killed in cold blood by Helen Reid (Helen Baxendale), who was impersonating her deceased sister, Sasha.
When Poole realised Helen had committed identity fraud, she silenced him by killing him with an ice pick.

Kris Marshall is open to returning
Kris Marshall starred in 30 episodes in total, making him the longest-running detective so far.
Speaking at a press event for Sanditon back in 2019, the actor was asked if he would ever return for a cameo.
He said: “Would I do a cameo? Would I go back, and do a cameo in Death in Paradise? Unequivocally yes.”
The cast have spoken out on Kris Marshall’s return
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk in February 2020 Ralf Little opened up on a potential cameo appearance from Marshall.
When asked whether he’d like to team up with Marshall on Death in Paradise, Little said it was a “nice idea”.
The star said: “We would have a lot of fun. We worked together. I worked with Kris before, so we know each other pretty well.”
DS Florence Cassell and DS Camille Bordey are returning
With two former Death in Paradise stars reprising their roles in the series, why would Kris Marshall not?
Joséphine Jobert will reprise her role DS Florence Cassell alongside Sara Martins, who plays DS Camille Bordey.
Florence left during season eight of Death in Paradise following the murder of fiancé Patrice Campbell (Leemore Marrett Jr).
However, it has now been confirmed that Florence is going to be back working at Honoré Police station alongside new DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little).
DS Camille Bordey left the island of Saint Marie to take an undercover job in Paris.
The last time Camille and Humphrey saw each other, they shared a passionate kiss.
Humphrey and Camille both had unresolved feelings for each other, so a reunion would most definitely make for interesting viewing.
The BBC confirmed Camille would be appearing in a two-episode storyline when her mother Catherine Bordey (Élizabeth Bourgine) lands herself in danger.
Returning to Saint Marie for the first time since her departure, Camille is thrown into an ongoing investigation involving her mother, Mayor Catherine Bordey.
“Catherine’s life is turned upside down when the death of a friend pulls her into grave danger.
“How will the case unfold, and will we see old acquaintances reunited?”
They teased: “To celebrate a decade of one of the most loved British crime dramas, Sara will appear in a special two-episode story.”

Death in Paradise boss teased Humphrey Goodman return
In an interview with Digital Spy back in January, executive producer Tim Kay was asked whether anyone has spoken about Marshall’s return.
He said: “No, we’ve not. You know, I see him from time to time anyway.
“He’s like everyone – you know, he had a great time on the show.
“And if we had the right story, I’m sure he’d come back. It could happen. Kris is great.
“But whether we’re planning it or not, is a different thing. Right now, that’s not on the table. But it could be. Who knows?”
The BBC has teased ‘surprises’
The guest-stars for the next instalment of Death in Paradise has officially been announced.
Comedian Jason Manford, former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher and Our Girls’ Luke Pasqualino, alongside I May Destroy You’s Danielle Vitalis are heading to the island of Guadeloupe alongside many other familiar faces.
Former Death in Paradise stars Joséphine Jobert and Sara Martins are also returning.
In a statement after the cast announcements, the BBC teased: “Filmed on the idyllic French-Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the tenth series sees D.I. Neville Parker continues to get to grips with island life whilst attempting to unravel a series of challenging cases with the team.
“Some surprises for the new series have already been announced, including the return of fan-favourites Joséphine Jobert and Sara Martins but viewers can expect plenty more exciting things to come!”
Fans will have to wait until 2021 to find out if Kris Marshall will make an appearance in the highly anticipated new series.
