ITV fans have been patiently watching an on-off relationship on Coronation Street as George Shuttleworth (played by Tony Maudsley) has long been trying to convince Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) to be more than just friends. Despite his advances, Eileen feels torn about pursuing a romantic relationship with the funeral director. However, in a new interview, the actor who plays George has opened up about what the future holds for him – and dropped a major hint as to how he may exit.

Speaking about his role, the actor who used to play Kenneth in ITV comedy, Benidorm, said: “I think fans of Kenneth fully expected me to join Corrie and go to work at Audrey’s salon playing the same character.

“I was thrilled to bits that Corrie trusted me to throw off Kenneth’s shackles and put on some full-length trousers for George.”

When asked about what is in store for George, Tony added to Inside Soap: “They can’t get rid of George, as there would no one to bury him.”

“I hope that doesn’t happen in the near future, as I’m happy on Corrie,” the actor added.

However, the ITV soap is no stranger to defying the odds so could Maudsley entertaining the idea of a deadly exit foreshadow a grizzly exit?

In the meantime, in scenes set to air next week, George and Eileen’s relationship becomes more complicated.

In the café, George tells Eileen that her son, Todd (Gareth Pierce) spent the night sleeping at the funeral parlour.

Eileen feels torn after George tells her to cut her son some slack.

In the meantime, Todd hunts through the rental property pages as he explains to George, he can’t afford any of them.

Todd admitted that the properties are out of his price bracket because he is still paying back his debts to Billy (Daniel Brocklebank).

George makes things worse for himself with Eileen, when he offers Todd a place to stay.

That doesn’t stop him from asking Eileen on a date, and she hesitantly accepts his offer.

Although, things take an expected turn when George overhears a conversation between Eileen and Mary (Patti Clare).

George, who is left gutted by Eileen’s admission goes on to cancel the date.

Eileen later confronts George, who cancelled their date by sending her a text message.
