Daniel (played by Rob Mallard) hasn’t had the best time with romance this year on Coronation Street as after a failed relationship with Nicky Wheatley (Kimberly Hart-Simpson) last year, he ended up falling for Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, this pairing didn’t work out, despite the two ITV soap characters still harbouring feelings for one another. As they were both encouraged to be honest with the other about their feelings during Friday night’s episode, it seemed the father of one was moving on with Lydia (Rebecca Ryan) as Daisy went to confess how much she loves him. But as one thing leads to another, could a pregnancy come as a surprise to everyone in the New Year?

At the beginning of the Christmas Eve instalment, Daniel was talking to his father Ken Barlow (William Roache) about his relationship dramas.

As the father of one spoke to his son about Daisy, it didn’t take him long to figure out the school teacher was holding a torch for her.

“Daniel, if you like her, please do something about it,” the stalwart declared, with Daniel explaining she seemed more interested in a football player she was dating.

Offering his take again, the iconic character told his child: “Daisy reminds me very much of Deidre. A sultry vision of sensuality.

“Every man she meets is enthralled,” he continued and it seemed his speech had given Daniel a lot to think about as he went to ask his love interest for a drink.

Unfortunately, at the same time, she was talking to her stepmother Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) about how the footballer she was dating had invited her to an influencer event.

Therefore, when her ex-boyfriend turned up and asked her out for a drink, she declined as she had already made plans to go out.

Disappointed, the father of one spoke to his nephew, Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) about Daisy turning him down and he encouraged him to forget about her and try meeting someone else at the Christmas market.

Later on in the episode, as Daisy was regretting her decision, Daniel met Lydia as Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) had brought her along to the drinks stall.

Realising her heart belonged to Daniel more than the football she was with, Daisy ran back to the cobbles in the pouring rain.

I’m sorry

Once she was at Daniel’s front door, she confessed everything she felt about him as she said: “I’m sorry I was so rude to you earlier.

“It was stupid. Well, guess what? I think the world of you and your stonking big brain and your pretty face.

“I have been the biggest idiot in the whole world,” she continued and just as she was about to say she loved him, Ken answered the door.

He told her his son was at the Christmas market and she dashed over to try and find him so they could fix their relationship.

In a heartbreaking twist, Daisy watched as Daniel planted a kiss on Lydia’s lips in the distance and she knew she’d lost him.

It’s not yet known how far things will go between Daniel and Lydia or whether this was just a drunken kiss the pair shared.

However, if they decide they want to enjoy each other’s company a bit more, they could end up sleeping together as they seek comfort in one another.

They might think they were being careful but as Lydia starts to experience morning sickness, she could think she is pregnant.

When the test reveals she is having Daniel’s baby, the pair could be shocked as neither of them was expecting to become a parent again.

Though it could force them into a relationship and as they begin to contemplate a future together, will Daisy have lost Daniel for good?

It seems Daniel might have to reconsider his options if Daisy does confess all to him, telling him just how much he means to her.

The actor who plays the school teacher, Rob, has spoken out about his alter-ego’s troublesome relationship with the barmaid.

Rob said: “He’s interested in her. He jumped in very quickly with Nicky, he jumped in very quickly with Bethany and to some extent with Sinead, he was set up to go to Oxford when he met her, so he doesn’t want to do that again.

“I don’t think he regrets any of the choices he made, but looking back he knows his life could have been very different had he made a different choice there.

“[Daisy is] different, she’s not like the women who’ve come into his life in the past but she also scares him a bit.”

“He can tell that she’s calculated but then he’s attracted to that danger, we’re all attracted to a bid of danger,” the actor continued.

“Often those partnerships you think won’t work turn out to be the best ones.

“People’s differences can complement each other and that can be interesting. I think their differences complement each other rather than pushing them further away.”

But will he give up the chance of being a father again to Lydia’s child to have the relationship he’s always wanted with Daisy?

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
