Alfie and Sharon gatecrash Kat and Phil's wedding in explosive EastEnders twist?

EastEnders has released a number of first look images of Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) wedding day, and let’s just say that – in typical soap fashion – it’s set to be a dramatic one!

Kat and Phil, one of Walford’s most unlikely pairings ever, became a thing a number of years ago, after a couple of steamy nights of passion in the back of car at the Arches.

And they say romance is dead!

Fast forward almost two years, and the couple are set to get married. Or are they? The jury is still out on whether or not the bride and groom-to-be will make it down the aisle and say ‘I Do’, as they’ll face a number of obstacles on the big day.

The obstacles that we are, however, referring to are most welcome, as they come in the form of Kat and Phil’s actual soulmates, Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) who are seemingly determined to make their former lovers see sense.

Alfie, who was last seen over three years ago, is set to stage the mother of all comebacks later this month, with his returning scenes seeing him arrive on Kat’s doorstep on her wedding day.

‘I think it was inevitable [bringing back Alfie].’ EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw told Metro.co.uk. ‘Phil and Kat are together, Alfie is the love of Kat’s life. We had to bring him back – and the right moment to bring him back was on their wedding day.’

Hear hear!

Chris made it quite clear that we’ll be seeing the ‘old’ Alfie upon his return. The ‘lovable rogue’, that we all know and love, and quite frankly, we couldn’t be more excited about that.

‘He makes a lot of mistakes but he’s always got good intentions,’ he said. He’s cheeky, but I think even if we hadn’t been telling this story I would have found a way to bring Alfie back.’

Shane Richie, meanwhile, described his comeback as a ‘good’ kind of ‘strange’, before adding that this time around, Alfie is Phil’s ‘nemesis’ due to his relationship with Kat.

‘There are some wonderful scripts where Alfie is calling Phil, to his face, Mr Potato Head or Gru from the Minions,’ he told us. ‘The only reason Alfie gets away with it is because he knows Kat’s standing there – and Kat won’t let anything happen to him.

‘This is where we get the comedy and drama. And yet Alfie’s still burning the candle for Kat and he’s trying to convince Kat that she feels the same.’

The question is: Will Alfie manage to convince Kat that she belongs with him and not Phil? Judging by the photos of the big day, he will go out of his way in order to do so!

Sharon, meanwhile, will seemingly attempt to make Phil see that he’s meant to be with her, or at least that’s what the promo picture for the upcoming scenes wants us to think.

The long-serving character, as viewers know, has long had feelings for Phil, and earlier this year, Phil struggled to resist temptation, telling Sharon that it’s ‘always been’ her, as he chose her over Kat.

But a misunderstanding subsequently led to him rejecting Sharon, before he reconciled with Kat, and thus the duo started planning their wedding.

Can Sharon win back her man? Will Phil see sense and realise that its Sharon he’s meant to be with?

Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: EastEnders is bouncing back in a big way, and you’re not going to want to miss a single second of what’s to come.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
