Alec Baldwin breaks silence after fatal shooting: 'My heart is broken'

Alec Baldwin has spoken out after accidentally fatally shooting director of photography Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie Rust.

In a tweet, the actor, who was starring in and co-producing the film, said: ‘There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.

‘I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred.

‘I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.’

Hutchins, 42, was reportedly shot in the stomach when Baldwin, 63, discharged the prop gun during filming.

Director Joel Souza, 48, was also shot in the shoulder, although he has since been released from hospital.

The cinematographer’s website biography states that she was born in Ukraine and graduated from the AFI conservatory in 2015. She was selected as one of American Cinematographer’s Rising Stars of 2019 as well as a cinematographer for the 21st Century Fox DP Lab in 2018.

Hutchins also worked as an investigative journalist with British documentary productions in Europe before she moved onto films, and she held a graduate degree in International Journalism from Ukraine’s Kyiv National University.

Some of her movie credits include 2020’s Archenemy, 2019’s Darlin’ and The Mad Hatter, released this year.

Tributes have poured in following her death.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson wrote on Twitter: ‘I am so so sorry.

‘Rest easy. My love and strength to your family.’

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn tweeted: ‘My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins & her family.’

Magic Mike actor Joe Manganiello was particularly affected by the news and paid tribute to Hutchins, who he recently worked with, in a heartfelt post which said: ‘I woke up to the messages and read the news and I am in shock. I was so lucky to have had @halynahutchins as my DP on Archenemy.

‘She was an absolutely incredible talent and a great person. She had such an eye and a visual style, she was the kind of cinematographer that you wanted to see succeed because you wanted to she what she could pull off next… and she was a fantastic person.’

The email read: ‘Local 44 has confirmed that the Props, Set Decoration, Special Effects and Construction Departments were staffed by New Mexico crew members. There were no Local 44 members on the call sheet.’

Police previously said a ‘projectile’ was fired by a ‘prop gun’ and they are investigating, while, according to Deadline, a spokesperson for Baldwin said there was an accident involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

Sources told Showbiz 411 that Baldwin ‘kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun”’, and said: ‘In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.’

A hot gun means a gun with real ammunition.

They added the actor and producer were taken to hospital immediately and had ‘no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead’.
