Scarlette Douglas was hoping to find recently widowed Maria her new home in the Spanish town of Viñuela in today’s A Place in the Sun. The guest brought along best friend Karon to help her but was left in tears when the Channel 4 presenter showed her around the fifth and final property.
Sharing her reason for the move, Maria said: “Now is the right time because unfortunately, my husband passed away 18 months ago.
“I need to find a new life, I’ve always loved Spain so why not now? It’s a new chapter for me.”
Maria had a budget of £250,000 and was looking for a three-bedroom property with a private pool.
The house hunt got off to a disappointing start as the first three properties were ruled out by Maria.

She felt the first one was too small and the second didn’t have the outside space surrounding a pool that she’d hoped for.
“Initially I wasn’t sure of the house but the more we saw it grew on me,” she explained.
“But I was disappointed coming outside because there’s no space around the pool. I’m really disappointed because I liked the house.”
The third house was too “rustic” for Maria’s taste but Scarlette finally enjoyed some success with a three-bedroom villa.
Maria admitted the fourth option was a contender but her reaction to the final property proved it kicked all her boxes.
“From what I can see now, this looks the best,” she said before breaking down in tears during the search.
“Sorry,” Maria apologised while wiping away tears and turning to best friend Karon.
“It’s alright take a minute I know this is a big move for you, it’s a big step,” Scarlette reassured.

“It’s just so lovely,” Maria commented before admitted the living space was perfect.
Back outside, she added: “Oh my god I’m moving in. Look at that pool it’s just amazing I’m gonna get upset again.”
“Do you see yourself here?” Scarlette asked and Karon interjected: “This has ticked every box.”
“I don’t care what bedrooms look like, I’ll sleep outside,” Maria joked.
Reflecting on the search, Scarlette began: “Maria, Karon we made it to the end. Did you enjoy it?”
“Fascinating experience,” Maria agreed and the presenter said: “Karon I’m so glad you came, you’ve been a bunch of laughs. Now, when I left you the last property had blown you away.”
“In my head, it’s where I wanted to go but never thought I could get it all,” the house hunter remarked.
The bungalow was on the market for £295,000 but Maria purchased the property for £260,000 after putting in a “cheeky” offer.
Once the offer had been accepted, Maria burst into tears and remarked: “I’m shocked,” before Scarlette added: “I’m shocked as well!”
A Place in the Sun airs on weekdays on Channel 4 at 3pm.
