A New Life in the Sun: Kerry reflects on decision to sell UK business ‘I couldn’t keep up’

A New Life in the Sun: Kerry discusses having to hire staff

The Channel 4 show returned with more insight into the lives of UK residents who had gone about making their livelihoods overseas. One of the guests featured on today’s edition was Kerry, who viewers have followed setting up a wellness retreat in the beautiful Italian countryside. After a clever marketing move saw the popularity of her business surge, Kerry made the difficult decision to sell-up her existing glamping site in the UK, explaining: “It’s always in the back of my mind.”

Kerry was struggling with the prospect of having to manage both her UK site and her newer Italian site.

But towards the end of today’s’ episode, she made a big decision about her future.

It came after a member of staff she was set to bring onboard dropped some unwelcome news.

Kerry explained to the camera: “There was bad news, she was going to come and help cook but then she got a new job.

“I’m a bit annoyed. Can you tell?” before admitting she was still “finding her feet.”

Kerry divulged: “It actually feels harder, at the moment, running a smaller business than it does a bigger one

Luckily, Kerry’s beloved dad was on-hand to help in his daughter’s hour of need.

“I’m immensely proud of what she’s done,” he gushed. “It’s amazing, she works damn hard – she’s a grafter, she is.

Kerry also had something to celebrate as her dad’s birthday coincided with his visit to Italy.

“Today’s my dad’s birthday, enough is enough, I’m not putting my work before my dad today, I’m not.”

Luckily, things started to pick up for Kerry after she used an entrepreneurial tactic to bring in new guests.

Despite coronavirus affecting overseas tourism, the narrator explained: “Thanks to her clever marketing, using Italian bloggers, word has quickly spread to locals about this new concept of luxury camping.”

One happy customer shared: “You don’t expect to find a place like this in Pianella. It’s a hidden gem, it’s really beautiful.”

Kerry later managed to take on a new member of staff, her old language teacher Alexandra, to help her with some of the admin.

She said: “I needed somebody to just help manage the phone situations sometimes. After I’d brought the bloggers in, I had so many enquiries I couldn’t keep up with them.

If the stables go through as we want them to, it means then we will be taking on a lot more group yoga retreats, therefore it will get busier and I know I am going to need that extra help.”

However, with business booming in Italy, Kerry made a huge decision about the future of her Yorkshire site.

She opted to sell-up and put it on the market, citing “the strain of running two businesses.”

“It’s always in the back of my mind like someone’s put a hoover in the side of my head and zapped out a whole cloud of business!

“I don’t need to think about it in the future which is bliss. Once I’ve got my business sold, I’ll look forward to what this country has to offer and the adventures I’m always craving,” Kerry concluded.

A New Life in the Sun airs weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
