Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke revealed he thought fans would scrutinise the age gap between him and his wife of 10 years, Arlene Silver.

Van Dyke, now 96, and Silver, now 50, first met at the Screen Actors Guild Awards back in 2007 and quickly became friends. At the time, he was 81 and she was 35.

The pair’s friendship ultimately turned romantic and they got married in February 2012.

In a new interview with Closer Magazine, the Mary Poppins actor revealed that he believed their romance would receive backlash, stating: “I thought there would be an outcry about a gold digger marrying an old man, but no one ever took that attitude.”

Silver, who was a makeup artist at the SAG Awards, reminisced about her first meeting with her husband: “He said, "Hi, I’m Dick." The first thing I asked him was, "Weren’t you in Mary Poppins?" Silver recalled.

She added: “We got along immediately as friends, so it didn’t feel like he was so much older than me.”

Silver called her husband "The most perfect human being" while Van Dyke attributes his happiness to his wife and explained how their age gap had very little impact on their marriage.

He said: “We share an attitude. She can go with the flow. She loves to sing and dance, which we do almost every day. She’s just delightful.”

They recently gave fans a glimpse into their fun-loving relationship in a video posted on Silver’s Youtube channel that went viral.

The sweet video, posted on Valentine’s Day, included the couple dancing to a cover of the Doris Day song “Everybody Loves a Lover” which featured Vantastix.

The loved up pair hit a milestone last month as they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.

Prior to meeting Silver, Van Dyke was married to Margie Willett for 36 years and they share four children together.

He then fell in love with actress Michelle Triola Marvin in 1976 and remained with her until her death in 2009.
